Northfield Public Schools serve Northfield, northern Rice and southern Dakota counties with four elementary schools, a middle school (grades 6-8), a high school and an alternative high school. The district also sponsors three charter schools. Overwhelming approval of a $40-million bond issue in 2001 has provided for high school renovations, a new athletic field and a new middle school that opened in fall 2004. The elementary reading and math curriculum are adopted district wide and children are taught with a similar skills-sequence approach. Greenvale Park, Sibley and Bridgewater are neighborhood schools for grades kindergarten - 5 with sections of all-day kindergarten at all three buildings. Every school is connected via fiber access, and every classroom has high speed Internet access. The district has a K-12 Technology and Media curriculum component that focuses on effective integration of technology into the instructional day. Grades 1-5 offer a contemporary program and Companeros, a Spanish immersion program. Gifted and Talented/Enrichment Services (GATES) responds to students’ varied needs, talents and interests so all engage in a challenging learning environment to maximize their talents and growth. A multi-faceted system to provide appropriate experiences for each student includes differentiation, enrichment opportunities and specialized services.

The district is a state leader in the number of National Merit Scholarship finalists each year. Academic assessments show district students scoring above the state average in nearly all areas. An extensive Community Education and Recreation program includes Early Childhood Family Education; Hand in Hand Preschool for school readiness; Early Learners Outreach; KidVentures, a school-age care program; Youth Enrichment and Development, a middle school activity center; Recreation opportunities for all ages; Adult Enrichment; Project ABLE for adults with disabilities; Adult Basic Education, and parent and community involvement and partnerships.
