Position description

The Department of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in environmental history (region and time open) to begin July 1, 2025 or later. We welcome applications from scholars who research any aspect of environmental history, in any region and period of human history. We are especially interested in candidates who will augment existing departmental strengths, such as medieval history and/or the history of science, and can contribute to our Public History program.

We anticipate that the courses offered by this hire will attract students of the social and life sciences as well as history and environmental studies majors. In addition to teaching basic survey courses in environmental history, the hire will teach upper-division and graduate courses in their specialty and advise students in the field.

The successful candidate will build intellectual and programmatic bridges with other fields and research clusters in the department and across campus and could potentially collaborate with scholars in UCSB's Bren School of Environmental Science and Management.

The department seeks candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, mentoring, professional activity, and service. For more information about our department, please visit our website at: https://www.history.ucsb.edu.
