Position Highlights:

• Location: Northwest Community Hospital - Arlington Heights, IL
• Full Time, 40 hours/week
• Day shift
• Rotating weekends and call

What you will need:

• Must have one of the following: Graduate from a Surgical Technology Program OR Bachelor's Degree from Accredited Nursing Program OR Graduate of an Accredited Surgical Assistant Program OR Graduate of Accredited Medical School OR Foreign Medical Graduate eligible to take the ECFMG examination
• Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA)-National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA)- National Assistant at Surgery Certification ORSurgical Assistant (CSA or SA-C)-American Board of Surgical Assistants OR National Surgical Assistant Association Required
• BLS Certification Required
• 1 Year Surgical Technologist or Registered Nurse with experience in first assisting Required
• Clinical-area specific experience Preferred

General Summary:

The Surgical Assistant plays a critical role in surgical procedures by demonstrating competencies and skilled assistance to the preoperative and intraoperative aspects of care with surgeons, nurses, and the surgical team. This position involves advanced knowledge of surgical procedures, patient care, and aseptic techniques to ensure safe and efficient surgeries.

• Maintain accurate and detailed records of surgical procedures, including pre-operative assessment of patient information, history, testing, and availability of imaging and diagnostic exams.
• Assist in patient preparation, positioning, and draping to ensure patient safety and comfort.
• Prepare, organize, and validate thepresence of surgical instruments, equipment, technology, and supplies required for each procedure.
• Provide skilled assistance to surgeons during surgical procedures, including retracting, suturing, and hemostasis, while maintaining a sterile field and anticipating the surgeon's needs throughout the procedure.
• Provide immediate assistance as directed by the surgical team, being prepared to respond swiftly to emergency situations within the surgical department.
• Monitor patients' vital signs and provide appropriate care during the surgical procedure to the surgeon and assist anesthesia as needed.
• Report to department leadership unexpected events or complications during surgery.
• Collaborating effectively with the surgical team to ensure a coordinated surgical process.
• Adhere to infection control protocols, maintain aseptic techniques in the operating room, andassist with instrument handling to prevent contamination and complete point of use care.
• Assist in training and mentoring surgical team members as needed and remain current with advances in surgical technology and techniques through ongoing education and training.
