Amend at UCSF in the UCSF Division of Health Equity and Society seeks to recruit a Director of Implementation and Research to manage all aspects of Amend's programmatic research and evaluation portfolio focused on public health-inspired prison transformation in the U.S.

The Director of Implementation and Research will be assigned a broad spectrum of research program development, analytical, and management duties that will require knowledge and experience in one or more of the following fields: criminal justice, conditions of confinement in U.S. jails and prisons, public health, occupational health, social movements; as well as superb and independent skills in research, writing, organization, and communication. The successful candidate will co-lead and manage scholarly research efforts and program evaluation responsibilities for the Amend program, with support and mentorship from the program's PI. The successful administration of this research program requires an ability to partner effectively with diverse stakeholders, including high-ranking appointed and elected government officials, carceral system leaders and managers, prison staff, and incarcerated people and their advocates. The Director of Implementation and Research must be able to collaboratively develop, plan, and implement innovative research and evaluation efforts, including developing and organizing IRBS, overseeing data collection and management, designing quantitative and qualitative research aimed at evaluating the program's impact on a host of health and criminal justice outcomes experienced by both incarcerated people and people who work inside prisons. The position requires leading the design, coordination, analysis, and dissemination of the research and evaluation program with multiple partnering correctional institutions, including staff oversight and responsibility (with support from the PI) for all research and evaluation for the Amend program. The successful candidate will support and supervise research data analysts, and assist Amend's program managers in conducting internal process and outcome evaluations to enhance technical assistance in prisons.

The successful candidate's primary responsibilities will include developing, implementing, and growing scholarly research and program evaluation efforts for Amend. In this role, he/she will: co-develop and oversee the Amend team's implementation of research protocols, across multiple states and international jurisdictions, to assess the impacts of pilot interventions and policy changes that occur as a result of Amend's engagement with state policymakers who partner with Amend. This includes leading instrument development, organizing and performing mixed-methods data collection, qualitative and quantitative analysis, producing diverse types of scholarly manuscripts, applying for grants, and contributing to strategic dissemination of research findings (e.g. internal presentations, memorandums, and legislative testimony) that advance policy changes, programmatic reforms, and advocacy at state and national levels.

The Director of Implementation and Research will produce and maintain research protocols with the UCSF Institutional Review Board and other state agencies as necessary, and train data analysts and other Amend staff to become proficient in IRB management. The Director will also work with the PI in identifying and submitting applications for relevant grant opportunities. The successful candidate will be expected to first author multiple publications in high-impact academic journals each academic year and support junior colleagues and academic collaborators in producing academic scholarship on prison reform and human rights.
