About the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology

The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the Georgia Institute of Technology is one of the largest producers of electrical engineers and computer engineers in the United States. Almost 2,600 students are enrolled in the School's graduate and undergraduate programs, and in the last academic year, 801 degrees were awarded. All ECE undergraduate and graduate programs are in the top five of the most recent college rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

In addition to the main campus in Atlanta, Georgia, ECE also has permanent operations at Georgia Tech-Lorraine in France and Georgia Tech-Shenzhen in China. Graduate students who spend at least one semester each at three Georgia Tech locations (Atlanta, Lorraine, and Shenzhen on three continents (North America, Europe, and Asia) can earn the Georgia Tech Global Engineering Immersion Program (GEIP) Certificate when they receive the Georgia Tech M.S. degree.

Job Summary

The National Electric Energy Testing, Research and Applications Center (NEETRAC) has an open position for an Engineering Supervisor at its 20-acre Forest Park, GA campus. As a self-supporting, membership-based provider of applied research and testing services to the electric energy transmission and distribution industry, NEETRAC is a unique center in the School of ECE at Georgia Tech. NEETRAC has 36 members across North America, including electric utilities, equipment manufacturers, and related industries in the electric energy arena. The different interests of the Membership enable NEETRAC to provide a dynamic work environment with extensive interaction to address real-world issues and opportunities. NEETRAC has extensive laboratory capabilities with services that include medium and high voltage testing for distribution & transmission systems, mechanical and environmental testing, quality assurance programs for transformers, cable, and aerial devices, as well as custom testing programs for product qualification and development. NEETRAC also performs high-level asset management and analytical studies and diagnostics services.

The Engineering Supervisor will have the opportunity to help NEETRAC grow its resources, capabilities, and reputation. The candidate should have experience supervising engineers in an environment that promotes collaboration and teamwork. Experience in research and/or laboratory environment and in the electric energy industry would be a plus, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Serve on the NEETRAC Leadership Team, helping to develop NEETRAC operational strategy and providing day-to-day leadership and input on the management of NEETRAC.
  • Monitor individual engineer work activities and work with the Technician Supervisor to help maximize customer service and assure that engineering staff have the resources needed to do their job.
  • Work/consult with NEETRAC Chief Engineers as needed to help assure that project work is performed appropriately.
  • Prepare performance reviews along with development and training plans for each engineer and perform regular monitoring and updates of both.
  • Work with GT Human Resources to advocate for research engineer promotions and raises as appropriate, including the development of NEETRAC-specific progression opportunities.
  • Ensuring that all safety procedures are in place and followed by team members.
  • Coordinating with engineers or other supervisors to set priorities for projects and ensuring that they are met.
  • Reviewing project proposals to determine feasibility, scope, cost estimates, and timelines.
  • Evaluating employee performance and providing feedback to help them improve their skills.
  • Monitoring the work of engineers to ensure that they are adhering to work plans and testing specifications.
Required Qualifications

This position vacancy is an open rank announcement. Research Engineer I

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related area.

Research Engineer II

  • A Master's degree and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • A Master's degree and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, engineering technology or a related field (highly preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in engineering or a related field.
  • Engineering supervision/management experience (highly preferred).
  • Experience developing employees (training and growth).
  • Strong leadership and communication skills and experience working in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects and engineers.
  • Experience with project management software and tools.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of the electric utility industry (highly preferred).
  • Some knowledge of laboratory operations, testing procedures or product design.
  • Some experience interfacing with academic institutions and research development.

Other Information

NEETRAC currently has six to seven engineers in addition to several 'retired but working' engineers as well as two associate directors who are managed by the director. The engineering staff is expected to grow over time as the workload increases. The NEETRAC staff (approximately 28 and growing) work as a team and the Engineer Supervisor helps to coordinate team activities. Strong communication skills are a must. The position also requires regular communication with other leadership team members to assist with the overall management of NEETRAC. The Engineer Supervisor is expected to have a sound understanding of engineering concepts but is not expected to conduct research or testing independently and will not have technical oversight of engineers work - but rather support the engineering staff to ensure they are meeting schedules, deliverables, and growing as professionals.
