Who We Are
Founded in 1965, UC Irvine is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and is ranked among the nation's top 10 public universities by U.S. News & World Report. The campus has produced five Nobel laureates and is known for its academic achievement, premier research, innovation and anteater mascot. Led by Chancellor Howard Gillman, UC Irvine has more than 36,000 students and offers 224 degree programs. It's located in one of the world's safest and most economically vibrant communities and is Orange County's second-largest employer, contributing $7 billion annually to the local economy and $8 billion statewide. The Composition Program, housed in the School of Humanities Department of English, prepares UCI students for the communication challenges of the 21st century. To that end, we offer two required first-year writing courses: in WR 50 (formerly WR 39B), students focus on critical reading and rhetorical analysis of texts across a variety of genres and media. In WR 60 (formerly WR 39C), students research current cultural, scientific, and social issues with an eye toward writing in the disciplines. Both courses consider writing in a larger communication context that includes digital literacy and speech. We also offer an array of foundational courses: WR 40 (formerly WR 39A) and WR 45 (formerly WR 37) help undergraduates develop literacy in traditional academic genres. Your Role on the Team Under the supervision of the Composition Program Manager, Composition Director and Composition Associate Director, the incumbent contributes to the daily operations of the Composition Program. Responsibilities include: providing administrative assistance to the Composition Program Manager, Director Associate Director and Course Directors, management of the student evaluation process for approximately 600 Composition sections yearly, coordinating the Composition Summer Session Program, and providing assistance with the UCI writing requirement and courses offered in Composition to approximately 9,000 students annually.
