Job Description
General Purpose of Job: Responsible for providing assessment, evaluation, and treatment of surgical patients in the Pre-Admission Testing Clinic and inpatient setting under the delegated authority and supervision of the physicians within the scope of medical practice set forth by the State of Michigan and the medical staff of Sparrow Health System. Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- The Nurse Practitioner works under the supervisor of the respective physician on duty.
- Participate with patient interviewing and decision-making process for pre-operative patients in PAT clinic in collaboration with Anesthesiologists, CRNAs, nursing staff and primary surgeons.
- Communicates with Surgeon or primary care physician any abnormality or recommendation for additional testing as deemed medically necessary prior to and/or after treatment.
- Assessing, planning and evaluating medical care in collaboration with Anesthesiologist.
- Perform physical examination and health history; order and review laboratory work, chest x-rays, and ECG's and institute treatment for abnormalities in collaboration with the responsible physician.
- Prescribes medications during pre-operative phase in collaboration with the responsible physician.
- Acts as a liaison between Primary physician, Surgeon, and Anesthesiologist.
- Initiate and pursue self-development activities through readings, lectures, and formal educational programs and programs offered by the Department of Anesthesia or professional organization.
- Participate in Department of Anesthesia Business meeting and Morbidity and Mortality conference.
- Formulate long and short-term goals based on self-assessment of strengths and weaknesses.
- Participate as appropriate in the formulation, revision and implementation of policies and procedures in the Department of Anesthesia.
- Act as a role model and a resource for peers, residents and nursing staff.
- Maintain a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and Local laws and regulations, the Corporate Compliance Plan, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
- Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System's Customer Service Behavioral Standards of Performance, by respecting the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve.
- Demonstrates knowledge and respects patient, service provider, and organizational confidentiality procedures and protocols defined under the HIPAA Privacy standards.
- Apply research findings in one's practice and teaching.
- Support and participate in research activities.
- Assist ASPIRE Anesthesiology Clinical Quality Reviewer (ACQR) and Anesthesiology QI Champion with implementation, ongoing data validation, data abstraction and entry to improve anesthesia process of care as part of the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC) and Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes group (MPOG).
- Promote understanding of research projects and/or findings for nursing students, staff and peers.
- Attends conferences and continuing medical education programs in order to maintain required CME's
- Forward all charts for review to anesthesiologist assigned.
- Collaborate with the health care team in planning and coordinating care for patients.
- Participates in Quality/Process Improvement initiatives including peer review activities.
