Position Description: Responsible for ensuring reliable and cost-effective natural gas supply to meet the forecasted demand of Tucson Electric Power, UNS Electric, and UNS Gas. Collaborates on daily gas trading activities to optimize the company's portfolio of transportation and storage assets, incorporating forward-looking volume forecasts and price signals to support informed decision-making. Identifies and executes opportunities to monetize excess natural gas, pipeline capacity, and storage positions through structured transactions and market-based strategies, ensuring compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements while maximizing asset value. Evaluates existing transportation agreements and large wholesale gas customer demand to maintain sufficient system capacity, optimize portfolio and long-term contract performance. Develops and maintains strong working relationships with natural gas suppliers, pipeline operators, and other key counterparties to support reliable operations and market access. Synthesizes market intelligence (forward curves, basis spreads, pipeline constraints, volumes and regional fundamentals) into actionable trading and commercial strategies. Develops, implements, and continuously enhances trading strategies aligned with the companies' participation in current and evolving wholesale markets, ensuring operational reliability, cost efficiency, and strategic positioning. Key Responsibilities: Gas Trader I
- Executes physical gas trades across day-ahead and real-time markets for TEP, UNS Electric, and UNS Gas to optimize transportation and portfolio value under the guidance of senior personnel.
- Daily activities include load and resource forecasting, deal execution, pipeline nominations, and required deal documentation.
- Available during standard & non-standard business hours including weekends as needed to support pipeline Operational Flow Orders (OFOs) and provide real-time updates on actual gas availability. Monitors and manages gas nominations, gas schedules, imbalances and system conditions and assists Real-Time Energy Traders, as needed.
- Overseeing nominations, confirmations, and curtailments across natural gas pipelines, actively trading to minimize gas imbalance impacts. Advises the Wholesale Marketing team on emerging issues, operational risks, and market-based solutions.
- Actively reviews the efficiency of the daily gas nominations and accounting reconciliation activities to ensure that those functions are completed in an optimal manner.
- Communicates between suppliers and customers to ensure that contractual nomination data is coordinated accurately throughout the delivery chain.
- Ensures all purchases and sales of natural gas are fully documented and summarized for accounting and billing purposes. Assists back office with invoice reconciliation.
- Performs other functions, job duties, and other Wholesale duties as defined by Supervisor.
Gas Trader II
- Collects market data and assists other traders with market forecasting and analysis. Provides Day Ahead power trading with current expected unit costs.
- Maintains an awareness and understanding of applicable Federal/State regulations and ensures Risk Management procedures and protocols are followed.
- Monitors electronic bulletin boards and collaborates with pipeline company contacts to track key volume activity and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Analyzes load studies, customer usage patterns, and demand forecasts to identify actionable trading and sales opportunities.
- Recommends and executes asset optimization opportunities within established risk management parameters.
- Monitors portfolio exposures and escalates trading, operational, and market risks as appropriate.
Gas Trader III
- Independently executes physical and financial trading strategies that optimize portfolio value and support long-term supply objectives.
- Evaluates trading risks and opportunities within approved risk management frameworks.
- Apply market analytics and historical pricing trends to identify and execute value-enhancing trading opportunities.
- Manages large volume customer contracts.
- Translates market and load insights into structured transactions, NSP offerings, and portfolio optimization strategies.
Gas Trader IV
- Provides strategic recommendations regarding portfolio risk, hedging structures, and market positioning.
- Mentors and develop junior traders. Serves as subject matter expert for gas markets and transportation strategy.
- Reviews, develops, and implements new natural gas procedures in conjunction with changes in participating market rules or policies.
- Monitors interstate pipeline tariffs and rate cases as required.
- Tracks policy and regulatory changes at applicable markets, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Arizona Corporation Commission.
- Critically assesses hedging strategies incorporating financial instruments, basis differentials, and optionality.
- Proactively identifies inefficiencies and opportunities for margin enhancement across the gas portfolio.
Minimum Qualifications - Gas Trader I:
- Completion of two years towards a college degree in Engineering, Economics, Business, Finance, or Accounting, or 2 years relevant experience in the utility industry.
- Must have demonstrated electric utility business knowledge and experience.
- Must have strong quantitative, analytical, and computer skills.
- Exceptional time management skills, including ability to prioritize, set, and meet deadlines.
- Working knowledge of the technical principles of electrical generation, natural gas and transmission systems.
- Position requires the ability to work independently, communicate effectively, with emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Electric Utility Industry Knowledge.
- Analytical and Quantitative Skills.
- Understanding of Energy Markets.

Minimum Qualifications - Gas Trader II:
- College degree in Engineering, Economics, Business, Finance, or Accounting, or 3 years' relevant experience in the utility industry.
- Ability to procure gas and schedule for multiple affiliates with guidance from senior personnel.
- Working knowledge of Northern American Energy Standards Board (NAESB) contract and International Swaps and Derivatives Association (ISDA) Master Agreement.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2 - 3 years wholesale gas or power trading experience or relevant utility industry experience.
- Knowledge of NAESB and ISDA contracts.
- Broad understanding of the utility business including the effects of decisions on the regulatory process.
Minimum Qualifications - Gas Trader III:
- College degree in Engineering, Economics, Business, Finance, or Accounting, with 5 years' relevant experience in the utility industry.
- Ability to procure and schedule gas for all affiliates with limited to no guidance from senior personnel.
- Independently develops and executes trading, hedging, and commercial strategies, including NSP transactions and portfolio optimization initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 4 - 5 years wholesale gas or power trading experience or combination of either. Along with gas or power scheduling experience.
Minimum Qualifications -Gas Trader IV
- 7+ years of natural gas trading or combination of natural gas and power trading experience.
- Must have advanced knowledge of economic and technical principles of the North American natural gas markets and applicable pipeline transportation systems.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of complex energy and natural gas contracts.
- Strong understanding of futures markets, basis markets, and financial hedging instruments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 4 years of gas trading with 3 years of relevant trading or equivalent electric utility industry experience.
- Proficient in all aspects of Natural Gas Trading, fundamental and structural, and quantitative and pricing modeling.
- Ability to create analysis of future demand for core customers.
- Experience in trading both Natural gas and Power.
