The Business Intelligence Developer designs, develops, and maintains enterprise business intelligence data solutions and semantic models that enable trusted reporting, analytics, self-service, and artificial intelligence capabilities across the organization. This position serves as a technical bridge between business requirements, Data Engineering, and Business Intelligence.
The Business Intelligence Developer partners with Business Intelligence Analysts to understand business processes, reporting requirements, key performance indicators, and analytical needs. The role works closely with Data Engineering teams to map source data and define requirements necessary to transform enterprise data from Bronze through Gold medallion architecture within Microsoft Fabric. Using governed Gold data, the Business Intelligence Developer designs and develops reusable enterprise semantic models that translate technical data structures into business-ready analytical data products with standardized relationships, measures, calculations, definitions, metadata, and business context.
The incumbent in this position is expected to model the following practices daily:

Essential Functions



  • Model, promote, reinforce, and recognize the consistent use of HOLT's Values Based Leadership (VBL) tools, models, and processes to ensure alignment with our Vision, Values, and Mission

  • Partners with Business Intelligence Analysts and business stakeholders to understand business processes, reporting requirements, analytical needs, key performance indicators, calculations, and business definitions

  • Translates business and analytical requirements into technical data and semantic modeling requirements

  • Collaborates with Data Engineering teams during data mapping and modeling activities to identify required source data, transformation logic, business rules, relationships, and data quality requirements

  • Defines Gold data requirements with Data Engineering to ensure data products are structured appropriately for downstream semantic modeling, reporting, analytics, and AI consumption

  • Validates Gold data against documented business requirements and source-system logic before incorporating data into governed semantic models

  • Designs, develops, deploys, and maintains enterprise semantic models within Microsoft Fabric

  • Develops and maintains DAX measures and standardized business calculations to ensure consistent calculation of enterprise metrics and key performance indicators

  • Adds business context to semantic models through clear naming conventions, descriptions, metadata, relationships, hierarchies, formatting, and documented business definitions

  • Develops reusable enterprise semantic models that can support multiple downstream reports, dashboards, applications, and analytical use cases rather than creating report-specific data solutions when enterprise reuse is appropriate

  • Designs semantic model architecture that allows specialized downstream semantic models to extend governed enterprise models for specific business or operational use cases

  • Optimizes semantic models for performance, scalability, usability, security, and maintainability

  • Implements appropriate data and semantic model security, including row-level security, object-level security, and other access-control requirements

  • Identifies data quality issues and works with Business Intelligence Analysts, Data Engineering, Data Stewards, and business stakeholders to determine appropriate resolution

  • Establishes and follows enterprise semantic modeling standards, naming conventions, documentation practices, reusable development patterns, and governance requirements

  • Documents data lineage, business definitions, transformation logic, model relationships, calculations, measures, and dependencies to improve transparency and maintainability

  • Uses Git-based source control and Azure DevOps to manage development work, version control, code reviews, pull requests, and solution deployment

  • Implements and follows CI/CD practices for semantic models and related Business Intelligence solutions across development, test, and production environments

  • Partners with Business Intelligence Analysts who use governed semantic models to develop Power BI dashboards, reports, and other business-facing analytical solutions

  • Partners with Data Scientists to ensure enterprise semantic models can appropriately support advanced analytics, machine learning, generative AI, and other AI-driven solutions

  • Evaluates emerging Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, semantic modeling, and analytics capabilities and recommends opportunities to improve the organization's Business Intelligence architecture

  • Provides training and technical support and serves as a subject matter expert for semantic modeling and Business Intelligence development

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge through ongoing training, conferences, webinars, certifications, and other educational opportunities

  • Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards

  • Performs other duties as assigned



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Advanced knowledge of Business Intelligence architecture, data modeling, dimensional modeling, and semantic modeling concepts

  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Fabric and Power BI architecture, including Lakehouses, semantic models, notebooks, workspaces, and deployment processes

  • Advanced understanding of dimensional modeling and star-schema design, including fact tables, dimension tables, relationships, hierarchies, and appropriate model grain

  • Advanced knowledge of Power BI semantic models and DAX, including measures, calculation logic, model relationships, filter context, and performance optimization

  • Advanced SQL skills for querying, validating, profiling, transforming, and reconciling enterprise data

  • Strong understanding of modern data architecture and Medallion Architecture, including Bronze, Silver, Gold, and semantic data layers

  • Ability to understand source-system data structures and work with Data Engineering teams to map source data into governed analytical data products

  • Ability to translate business processes, terminology, rules, calculations, and analytical requirements into scalable technical and semantic solutions

  • Experience with Git-based source control, Azure DevOps, pull requests, peer review, CI/CD, and modern software development practices

  • Understanding of Power BI reporting and visualization principles sufficient to design semantic models that effectively support downstream analytical experiences

  • Understanding of AI and advanced analytics concepts and how governed semantic data can support AI-driven analytical solutions

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify data discrepancies, determine root causes, and implement appropriate solutions

  • Excellent verbal, written, communication, documentation, and presentation skills

  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Strong consulting and influencing abilities with the ability to work across Business Intelligence, Data Engineering, IT, leadership, and operational business teams

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively as part of a cross-functional development team

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while maintaining technical quality, documentation, and development standards

  • Ability to train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to other Business Intelligence professionals



Requirements

Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Analytics, Data Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Science, Business, or a related discipline required

  • Minimum of two years of experience in Business Intelligence, analytics engineering, data modeling, data development, or related disciplines required; four or more years of experience preferred

  • Demonstrated experience designing and developing dimensional or semantic data models required

  • Experience developing Power BI semantic models and DAX required

  • Experience with SQL and relational data structures required

  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric or comparable modern cloud analytics platforms strongly preferred

  • Experience with Microsoft Fabric notebooks, Python, or similar data development technologies preferred

  • Experience working with Data Engineering teams on data mapping, transformation requirements, and analytical data products preferred

  • Experience with Git-based source control, Azure DevOps, CI/CD, or comparable modern development practices preferred

  • Up to 15% to include conferences or travel to other locations for in-person meetings
Physical Requirements:


  • This position involves extended periods in a stationary position

  • Occasional movement inside the office to access office machinery, file cabinets, etc.

  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines

  • This position frequently communicates with employees and stakeholders; Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations

  • Occasionally moves or transports items weighing up to 10 lbs.
