About the Position:


The George Mason University Resources Department is looking for a passionate and enthusiastic individual to serve as a part-time Communications Specialist. Responsibilities:



  • Coordinate and implement internal communication plans on key initiatives, programs, policies, or issues;
  • Write, edit, and proofread assigned documents, including memorandums, marketing materials, technical guides, and website copy;
  • Perform routine updates to HR's website as requested by department colleagues and leadership;
  • Manage the HR communications email inbox, including referring complex issues to appropriate contacts as necessary;
  • Update HR's social media channels according to communication plans and/or supervisor direction;
  • Create graphics or visuals, including logos or other visual communication elements; and
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications:



  • Strong writing and editing skills, preferably in a deadline-based environment;
  • Ability to translate technical policies into plain and engaging language based on target audiences' needs;
  • Experience with web content management systems such as WordPress or Drupal;
  • Experience with graphic design platforms such as Canva or Adobe Illustrator;
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to handle confidential or highly sensitive information with discretion;
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to collaborate across teams/departments and maintain effective working relationships; and
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 programs, particularly Word.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, English, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Higher education, public workforce, or human resources experience;
  • Working knowledge of web design and/or web accessibility; and
  • Experience managing professional social media accounts, including LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter/X.
