Opportunity Highlights

  • Flexible per diem schedule based on coverage needs
  • Practice within a Level III NICU at UNC Health Rex
  • Collaborative team of Neonatologists and Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (NNPs)
  • Average daily NICU census of 17 patients
  • Approximately 2-3 NICU admissions per day
  • Approximately 5,000 deliveries annually at the Level III hospital and over 7,000 deliveries annually across all covered hospitals
  • Flexible call model with home call or in-house coverage opportunities.
  • Opportunity to practice a broad range of neonatal medicine and procedures

Schedule & Coverage

Coverage opportunities may include:

  • Day shifts: 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM
  • Night shifts: 4:30 PM - 8:30 AM
  • Weekend coverage consisting of daytime rounding and evening/night call responsibilities
  • Holiday coverage as needed

Shifts are scheduled to support the existing neonatology team during planned and unplanned absences.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive neonatal care within the NICU setting
  • Evaluate and manage critically ill and premature newborns
  • Attend high-risk deliveries as indicated
  • Collaborate closely with obstetric, pediatric, nursing, and subspecialty teams
  • Supervise and collaborate with Neonatal Nurse Practitioners providing 24/7 coverage at UNC Health Rex, UNC Health Holly Springs, and UNC Health Johnston
  • Participate in family-centered care, patient education, and care coordination

Procedures

  • Physicians should be comfortable performing neonatal procedures including:
  • Endotracheal intubation
  • Umbilical venous and arterial catheter placement
  • Lumbar punctures
  • Chest tube placement
  • Additional neonatal procedures consistent with Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine practice

Qualifications

  • Required MD or DO from an accredited medical school
  • Completion of an accredited Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine
  • Current North Carolina medical license
  • Current NRP certification

Preferred

  • Previous NICU practice experience
  • Strong commitment to quality, patient safety, and collaborative care

Education Requirements:
* Active member of the Rex Hospital Medical Staff, including meeting the Board Certification requirements. Graduation from an accredited school of medicine.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* Board Certified/Board Eligible in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine
* DEA; NRP; MD
Professional Experience Requirements:
* Prefer prior hospitalist experience.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
* Language Skills: Should be able to communicate proficiently in English.

REASONING ABILITY

High-level quantitative and qualitative reasoning skills are essential in order to diagnose medical and clinical issues presented by patients.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

North Carolina Medical License, DEA License, BLS/Neonatal Resuscitation certification preferred. Board certified/eligible in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
