Primary Purpose of the Organization:
Fayetteville State University's Office of Access & Student Success encourages and assists families in the Sandhills Region of North Carolina, who are traditionally under-represented in post-secondary education with preparation for, entry into and completion of a post-secondary degree.

The TRIO Student Support Services Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education for the purpose of providing structured academic support activities to low-income and first-generation college students. The goal of TRIO SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of its participants. The services provided create opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
The primary purpose of the Academic Advisor position is to support low-income and first-generation students at Fayetteville State University with structured academic support such as coaching, advisement and instruction to improve successful course completion, retention and graduation.

This position is funded by non-state funds and has been designated time limited. Continuation of this position is contingent upon the continuing availability of those funds.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements:

  • An earned master's degree from an accredited institution preferably in the degree program to which they are assigned.
  • Some work experience in higher education, preferably in academic advising, counseling admissions, enrollment management or student affairs.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:
* Ability to follow directions to implement evidence-based program; excellent organizational skills meet deadlines; effective interpersonal and oral communication skills; and an interest in working with high school students.
* Applicants must have the temperament for engage with college level students with a focus on the student experience.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
* Prefer candidate to have experience in overcoming barriers similar to SSS participants.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prefer one year of paid or volunteer experience working with low-income/first generation college students.
Some work experience in higher education, preferably in academic advising, counseling admissions, enrollment management or student affairs.
