About The Role

The Springer Nature Journals Group aims to support researchers in communicating and advancing discovery for a better world. We do this by providing a trusted environment in which researchers can quickly, easily and transparently share their discoveries, data and research stories.

The Collections Management and Acquisition Team is a division within the Publishing Performance & Intelligence group providing expertiseand dedicated resources to support the growth of commissioned content across the SN Journal portfolio.

The Managing Editor will work with commissioning editors, publishers, external editors and our operational partners to organize and manage collections on behalf of key parts of the SN Journals portfolio. They will be responsible for the project management of multiple live collections and will work closely with our operational teams to provide an enhanced level of oversight for commissioned articles.

Increasing commissioned content is an essential part of our strategy to grow our open access portfolio and this role ensures we can do this at scale while maintaining an excellent level of quality and author service.

This is a full-time role offered in either the New York, Jersey City or Philadelphia office. The locationstrategy supports the team structure and aligns with business needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage multiple live collections simultaneously, establishing priorities, coordinating activities across stakeholders, and driving projects through to successful completion within agreed timelines

  • Support Commissioning Editors, Guest Editors, and Authors throughout the collection lifecycle by providing clear, timely, and effective communication, building trusted relationships, and ensuring a positive author and editor experience

  • Collaborate closely with the Marketing team to support collection promotion activities, align on priorities, and ensure key stakeholder needs are effectively balanced and addressed

  • Act as the primary point of contact for Guest Editors and operational teams, fostering strong partnerships, facilitating collaboration, and ensuring seamless communication throughout the collection process

  • Monitor, analyze, and report on collection performance using data and key metrics to provide actionable insights, identify opportunities, and support informed decision-making

  • Track content flow and delivery against collection submission windows, proactively identifying risks, resolving issues, and taking appropriate action to ensure objectives are achieved

  • Provide enhanced oversight of commissioned content, maintaining high standards of quality and service, managing escalations effectively, and ensuring confidence in the overall collection process

  • Oversee manuscript screening activities and ensure commissioned submissions progress through appropriate peer review and editorial processes in accordance with publishing policies, ethics standards, and quality requirements

  • Monitor editorial turnaround times and workflow performance, using data to identify bottlenecks, improve efficiency, and support operational excellence across collections

  • Partner with the Editorial Support Advisor team to develop, maintain, and continuously improve workflow documentation, ensuring consistent processes, knowledge sharing, and scalable operational practices across portfolios

  • Serve as a key liaison for Production and other cross-functional teams, building trust with stakeholders, resolving complex queries, and ensuring content progresses efficiently through publishing workflows and systems

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required

  • Demonstrated experience in scholarly, academic, or journal publishing, with strong knowledge of editorial workflows, publishing systems, and the submit-to-accept process

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and delivering high-quality outcomes

  • Strong understanding of publishing ethics, research integrity, peer review processes, and quality standards within a publishing environment

  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with editors, authors, reviewers, operational teams, and other cross-functional partners

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to interpret performance data, identify trends, assess risks, and use insights to support decision-making and continuous improvement

  • Demonstrated ability to drive operational excellence through effective workflow management, process optimization, and the implementation of scalable, consistent practices

  • Ability to balance service, quality, and efficiency while managing competing priorities in a fast-paced publishing environment

  • Awareness of Open Access publishing models, policies, and industry trends is desirable

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $66,300 - $70,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level, and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
