The Work You Will Do
The General Services Journeyman with the Special Operations unit is responsible for moving, picking-up, delivering, and/or installing equipment, furniture, and/or other materials, as assigned. This role is involved with university events set-up, as well as special transportation and delivery services requests. May also be assigned with hanging banners and signage, assisting with remodeling projects, including demolition, and other tasks, as assigned.
Job Accountabilities:
  • Moves, picks up and delivers equipment, supplies and/or other materials. Arranges access for furniture moves, as needed. Relocates office furniture, equipment, machines, lab materials, etc., as needed. Installs modular furniture and objects such as framed art on walls, as appropriate. Delivers and installs rental equipment and furniture, as assigned. Repairs custom equipment, as needed.
  • Assists with event set-up and break-down.
  • Assists with remodeling projects, including demolition. Disposes of furniture and materials, as needed, according to university and state standards and guidelines.
  • Hangs banners and signs from buildings and trees, as assigned. Fixes plexiglass maps, as needed.
  • Operates forklifts and other heavy moving equipment. Operates specialized tools (e.g., jackhammers, pallet-jacks, etc.) as required.
  • Assists other trades such as carpenters, painters, etc. with a variety of duties related to trade, under supervision.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.
  • In addition, the successful candidate must also demonstrate, through ideas, words and actions, a strong commitment to USC's Unifying Values.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school or equivalent; combined work experience and education as equivalent.
  • 0 - 6 months of related experience.
  • Less than one year of experience in moving furniture and general maintenance.
  • Experience driving 1 12 ton trucks.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn city and state building codes, OSHA rules and regulations, university standards and other requirements for work place safety.
  • Valid CA driver's license required with a minimum of 2 years' driving experience. Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System. Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1 year of experience
The hourly pay rate for this position is $19.40. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
