Core Facility Technologist (Oncology)

We are seeking aCore Facility Technologist who will perform basic core facility tasks and completes routine research specimen procurement, processing, and shipping, following laboratory and governing regulatory practices in a central services core facility.

The Core Facility Technologist is responsible for various tasks including preparing kits; delivering prepared kits to the outpatient oncology clinics, the Central Processing Core (CPC) and other locations on campus; assisting with shipment receipt and inventory management.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform core facility tasks by following procedures or with instructions.
  • Use basic research knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the core facility.
  • Gain problem-solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the core facility activities, and experience.
  • Gain experience with specimen procurement, processing, and shipping.
  • Identify and resolve common problems involved in core facility services.
  • Increase own skill base and knowledge of research and relevant core facility services.
  • Perform specimen procurement/transport, processing, transfers, and shipping based on core facility procedures.
  • Complete specimen documentation and specimen data entry into databases.
  • Prepare, qualify, and maintain standard laboratory equipment and log sheets.
  • Perform core facility maintenance, monitoring inventory of supplies, and cleaning equipment.
  • Assist in query investigation and resolution.
  • Uphold the highest quality of provided services, ensuring adherence to the Quality Management System (QMS) plan to maintain excellence and compliance in operations.
  • Provide good customer service.
  • Abide by core facility operational regulations and guidance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

In addition to the duties described above

  • Prepare study/visit-specific specimen collection kits and completes requisition forms for subject visits based on core facility procedures and study-specific instructions (SCI), under supervision
  • Understand and use the electronic inventory/barcode system to record prepared or destroyed kits and supplies
  • Help receive, organize and maintain the kits and supplies inventories, including breaking down expired kits and sorting recycled supplies
  • Transport kits to outpatient oncology clinics, Central Processing Core and other locations on campus
  • Pick up kits or materials from other departments on campus for transport to the Central Kit facility
  • May assist with training of new staff.
  • Gain problem solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the core facility activities, of clinical research, and experience.
  • Increase own skill base and knowledge of clinical research and relevant core facility services.
  • Identify and resolve common problems involved in core facility services.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Related post-undergraduate work experience.
  • Certificate from technical institute or internship experience.
