Position Summary
The Forestry Technician plays a critical role in supporting the installation's Natural Resources Program. This multifaceted position blends field-based wildlife and forestry management with essential administrative, clerical, and operational support. The ideal candidate will assist in the implementation of the Integrated Natural Resource Management Plan (INRMP), conduct forest inventories, support wildlife and endangered species surveys, and provide comprehensive coordination for the installation's Annual Deer Hunt. This role requires a versatile professional capable of transitioning seamlessly between rugged field environments and rigorous database management and reporting tasks.
Key Responsibilities

Forestry and Natural Resources Management

  • INRMP Implementation: Assist in the ongoing execution, review, and updating of the installation's Integrated Natural Resource Management Plan (INRMP).
  • Timber Management: Execute professional forestry services to achieve the silvicultural goals associated with the installation's timber management program.
  • Forest Inventory: Provide robust forest inventory support, including conducting field data collection, entering field data into environmental databases, and preparing comprehensive inventory reports.
  • Wildlife & Ecological Surveys: Assist in the development and execution of endangered species surveys, as well as general surveys of local flora and fauna.
  • Data Collection: Systematically collect, compile, and record data concerning nuisance wildlife, fisheries, and broader ecological metrics.
  • GIS & Mapping: Utilize Geographic Information System (GIS) tools to map natural resources, track invasive species, and support forest inventory plotting.

  • Technical Reporting: Draft technical inputs, compile field data for endangered species consultations, assist in developing management plans, and gather information for mandated data calls and annual reports.

Annual Deer Hunt Operations

  • Event Coordination: Staff various logistical and administrative functions during firearm deer hunts, which typically occur on weekends. Duties include checking hunters in and out, directing hunter parking, presenting hunter safety briefings, and checking in harvested deer.
  • Administrative Support: Provide comprehensive clerical and computer support services for the Natural Resources Annual Deer Hunt. Issue deer tags and ensure all participants receive required compliance information.
  • Database Management: Utilize government-furnished equipment to input, track, and maintain hunt-related data, including deer hunt areas, permit holder details, and harvest numbers. Generate ad hoc reports and provide electronic copies of reports with corresponding source documentation.

Financial and Administrative Support

  • Fee Tracking: Assist designated Fund Custodians in tracking hunting fees received from installation employees and the general public (received via cashier's checks or money orders).
  • Mail & Remittance Processing: Safely open envelopes received from hunters, strictly adhering to established handling procedures.
  • Financial Documentation: Record received checks into electronic spreadsheets and official transmittal forms. Ensure all checks are securely turned over to one of the two designated Fund Custodians daily.
  • Voucher Preparation: Draft technical inputs for weekly deposit vouchers using Department of Defense Form DD-1131, operating under the direct oversight of a Fund Custodian throughout the fee collection period.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Wildlife Management, Environmental Science, Biology, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field.
  • Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping and field data collection methodologies. Strong computer literacy, including proficiency in database entry and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word).
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to draft technical reports, present safety briefings to the public, and interact professionally with government personnel and civilian hunters.
  • Administrative Diligence: High attention to detail regarding data entry and financial tracking. Must possess the integrity and organizational skills required to handle financial remittances and prepare DD-1131 deposit vouchers.
  • Flexibility: Willingness and ability to work non-standard hours, particularly weekends during the Annual Deer Hunt season.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be able to work comfortably in both an office setting and outdoor field environments.
  • Field work requires traversing uneven, forested, and rugged terrain in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, particularly during weekend hunt operations, and lift up to 50 lbs when checking in deer or handling forestry equipment.
