Overview

This position has a progression.

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

Works independently under general supervision of Maintenance & Construction Supervisor from written/verbal orders following specific policies/procedures/ methods as a hands-on leadworker in the planning, estimating and layout, and directs a small work group in the installation, maintenance, repair, construction of machinery, equipment, structures and/or performs the more complex/difficult tasks of Welder Journey-worker for the process of making SNG and/or by-products.



Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Makes/Works from field sketches, blueprints, plans by reading/interpreting manufacturers' repair/maintenance manuals to lay out and/or estimate cost/time/ materials to determine procedures, materials and tools required for welding tasks.
  • Fabricates from flat sheet a pipe expansion, joints, cones, elbows, reducers, flanges and/ or all similar special vessels and/ or piping shapes using shop math, templates, measuring instruments.
  • Performs the more complex/ difficult/ diverse arc/ gas welding, cutting, brazing and soldering on all types of metals/alloys, fabricates/repairs and preheats metal surrounding welding zone to prevent distortion and/or spreading of cracks/flaws.
  • Layout, assemble and perform welding work on equipment, piping, machinery where weld part subject to unusual/constant strain, high pressure/temperature and/or vibration.
  • Welds high pressure boiler, steam lines, pressure vessels, oil/ gas lines in overhead, horizontal, vertical positions.
  • Operates/Maintains welding machine/equipment, torches, hot-tap machines and/or prepares work areas by removing combustible materials, checking for explosive atmosphere and/ or correcting/ removing fire hazards.
  • Writes preventative maintenance actions taken in logs/reports/PC terminals according to direction/questions in software and implements all preventative maintenance actions according to such schedule.
  • Maintains the work area, equipment and all control devices in a clean, orderly condition and/or directs lesser grades to perform housekeeping duties and may perform same in his area.
  • Directs/Supervises all personnel in job sites/work areas/project areas to assure proper safety signs/warning devices are working correctly and/or in place according to safety rules/standards and all personnel use/wear prescribed safety equipment/ clothing as required/directed.
  • Drives assigned vehicles as directed and qualified.
  • Performs related work as directed/required.

OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complies with all safety rules and cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety and safe work habits, to include the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
  • Complies with all applicable corporate and Hawaii Gas policies and procedures.
  • Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner; performs housekeeping duties as required and/or instructed. Works in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager.


Qualifications

Required Work Experience:

  • At least four years of practical experience either through the successful completion of an apprenticeship training program, or four years of responsible trade work.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct and coordinate the work of others in a harmonious fashion, and to plan and skillfully lay out work. Qualified in all phases of the work described.
  • Possesses a very good knowledge of all pertinent codes, regulations, standards, and safety rules in addition to standard practices, processes, methods, tools and materials of the trade. Must know the material characteristics and properties of steel, aluminum, and other metals.
