Job Description

The Building Utilities Mechanic at South Central College is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing boilers, building automation control systems, plumbing fixtures, and other Facility related equipment. The position requires an understanding of chillers, pumps, cooling towers, and water treatment systems.The Building Utilities Mechanic may exercise some responsibilities for purchasing materials for work performed by outside vendors, and approvals of bill of landing/invoices. Work is done in accordance with established procedures, and frequent and detailed instructions are given on new and complex work.

Under general supervision, this position troubleshoots, diagnoses, and performs semi-skilled jobs in a variety of trade areas. Work is usually assigned and inspected by the Director of Facilities. This position will collaboratively work with other Facilities staff and skilled trades to support classrooms, laboratories, administrative spaces, and mechanicals systems for South Central College.

Responsibilities

1. Operate, Maintain, and Repair Building Utility Systems

  • Operate, monitor, inspect, maintain, and repair Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems, including Steam Boilers, high efficiency hot water boilers, air coolers chillers, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, and other mechanical systems.

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on mechanical and utility equipment.

  • Assist with boiler plant operations and system transitions.

  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical system malfunctions.

  • Perform plumbing and minor electrical tasks within licensure.

  • Utilize building automation and maintenance systems. Make adjustments, and repairs as needed.

2. Provide Facilities Support, Emergency Response, and Seasonal Operations

  • Respond to emergency maintenance situations, system outages, and life-safety issues.

  • Support seasonal system transitions, including heating-to-cooling and cooling-to-heating changeovers.

  • Assist with grounds maintenance, snow removal, and ice control as needed to ensure safe campus operations.

  • Work collaboratively with skilled trades and provide work direction to helpers as assigned.

  • Direct helpers and contractors as assigned.

3. Safety Compliance and Documentation

  • Follow OSHA and institutional safety policies.

  • Maintain proper documentation and logs.

4. Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department and maintain the reputation of the organization as a viable business partner.

  • Complete all annual training requirements.

Salary Range:

$29.93 - $34.52 per hour

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid State of Minnesota boiler license at the level of Second Class C Engineer or higher, or an equivalent qualifying trade license (e.g., Journey-level Plumber or Electrician) as required by Minnesota statute.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license and ability to meet institutional driving requirements.

  • Working knowledge of building and mechanical trades, including standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in maintenance and repair work.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform semi-skilled work in plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems, building automation systems, and related mechanical systems.

  • Ability to troubleshoot, perform minor repairs, and complete routine maintenance on buildings, machinery, and equipment with minimal supervision.

  • Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, and trade equipment, along with knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices to perform work safely and efficiently.

  • Ability to meet physical demands including lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing, bending, crawling, and prolonged standing/walking, and ability to follow verbal and written instructions effectively.

Preferred Qualification

  • State of MN Boiler's License - 1C or Chief C

  • Refrigeration or EPA Section 608 Universal Certification

  • Forklift or powered industrial truck certification

  • Experience with Building Automation Controls or Energy Management Systems

  • Knowledge of occupational safety practices, lockout/tagout procedures, and confined space awareness

  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel) and general computer skills, including work order systems, emails, and basic data entry.

  • In accordance with the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities (Minnesota State) Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to Minnesota State's Vehicle use criteria and consent to Motor Vehicle Records check.
