A Brief Overview

The Cardiac Center is a multidisciplinary program comprised of five major departments: Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, Cardiac Critical Care Medicine, and Cardiac Nursing. The Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) is a 40-bed unit that cares for medically complex patients requiring continuous monitoring and advanced therapies.

Our Advanced Practice Provider (APP) team includes Acute Care Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants who work alongside attending physicians and house physicians to provide 24/7, year-round care. Our APPs are integral members of the multidisciplinary care team, delivering expert clinical care while also contributing to education, quality improvement, research, and community and global health initiatives.

In collaboration with attending physicians, Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants serving in Front Line Ordering Clinician (FLOC) roles are responsible for the comprehensive management and follow-up of a high-acuity patient population within their scope of practice, privileges, and expertise. Care is delivered across designated inpatient and hospital-based outpatient settings. Key responsibilities include direct patient care, clinical consultation, professional development, education, and research activities.

APPs in these roles manage complex patient populations and assume a high level of clinical accountability. Depending on unit needs, they may perform invasive procedures and interventions to promote physiologic stability and optimize patient outcomes. These positions also include off-shift responsibilities, with rotating schedules that may encompass days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays based on the operational needs of the Cardiac Center.
