Job Description
ECU Sustainability Program and ECU Recycling Services are currently seeking a Waste Reduction Specialist Intern to assist with a number of activities through the fall 2026 and spring 2027 semesters. There is a possibility to continue working into Summer followed by the 2027-2028 school year if job performance is satisfactory. The student selected for this competitive role will be responsible for the following:
1. Facilitating monthly Litter Cleanups at the Town Creek Culvert - recruiting groups of student volunteers, picking up bags, gloves, and pickers and taking them to the parking lot at the Willis Building, providing supplies to volunteers and participating in the litter cleanup, compiling collected trash for pickup, and taking a group photo to post on social media.
2. Social media for ECU Recycles - the intern will need to create an Instagram, Facebook, and Tik Tok account for ECU Recycles to post campus recycling tips and rules as well as volunteer opportunities and general information about the 3 R's: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
3. America Recycles Day - the intern will work in collaboration with the ECU Recycling Coordinator and Sustainability Outreach Specialist to plan, promote, and host an event on campus to raise awareness about recycling and waste reduction.
4. Waste Audits - the intern will work with the ECU Recycling Coordinator to conduct waste audits for campus departments working on Green Office Program certification. In addition, the student will support Sustainability Clubs and SGA with any waste audit projects in the residence halls, academic buildings, or administrative facilities on campus.
5. Todd Dining Hall Recycling - the intern will need to check the recycling dumpster behind Todd Dining Hall 3 times per week for the first 6 weeks of the fall semester. We are facilitating a pilot project to recycle plastic and metal from the back of the kitchen and need to monitor the volume of materials being recycled.
6. Compost Pilot Projects - the intern will work with the ECU Sustainability Manager to monitor the progress and address any concerns associated with two compost pilot projects: one at the Belk Building off Charles Blvd. and one at the Allied Health Sciences Building on Health Sciences Campus.
7. "Recycle Right" Campaign - intern will work with the SGA Sustainability Director and the Sustainable Development Committee, Student Sustainability Clubs, and Student Athletes to promote recycling cans and bottles at athletic events and other big events on campus like Get A Clue, Barefoot on the Mall, Campus Sustainability Day, Earth Day Festival, and others. Campus Race to Zero Waste - intern will work with the Sustainability Outreach Specialist and Campus Living to promote this waste reduction and recycling competition in residence halls and online during the spring semester.
8. Tailgate Recycling - intern will recruit student volunteers and use an ECU pickup truck to stop at the most popular tailgate lots and distribute blue recycling bags and educate tailgaters about proper recycling practices. This means that the student selected for this position must be available and willing to work during the 4 hours leading up to kickoff for each of the home games scheduled for the fall 2026 season as well as the day after each game to help ECU Recycling Services staff collect all the recyclables from the tailgate lots.
In addition, the student intern may be asked to help with promotions and setup for campus sustainability events, writing articles for the monthly newsletter, and other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
