The Center for Prison Education & Research in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a (Hybrid) Reentry Coordinator.

About the Opportunity

This position will contribute to the Center's mission to provide educational access and support to incarcerated students as well as to develop educational reentry services for students approaching release or who have been released. The Reentry Coordinator will serve as the primary point of contact for students who are released from our prison education program. This involves travel to select prisons and requires possessing a valid driver's license.

What You'll Do

  • Assist in providing support to students at SCI Greene, a maximum-security prison in PA, who are approaching release or have been released, which may include helping students continue their education at WVU or elsewhere, apply for emergency funding, access technology support, and navigate other support resources
  • Center Operations
    • Assist with annual onsite teacher training and convening
    • Attend weekly core team meetings
    • Attend monthly Advisory Council meetings
    • Assist with fundraising and educational events
  • Recruit applicants for the Reentry Fund and Darrin Lester Scholarship; provide educational support to recipients of Reentry Fund awards and Darrin Lester Scholarships
  • Assist with convening of a WV and southwestern consortium of prison education and reentry organizations
  • Work with the Director and Program Coordinator on the planning for a WVU Higher Education in Prison Symposium in summer 2028.
  • Assist with distribution and updating of a Reentry Guide for West Virginia and southwestern PA
  • Identify relevant data needed to evaluate reentry program's effectiveness and assist with collection

Pay Grade: 13

Qualifications
  • Associate degree related to the position to which assigned.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of work experience directly related to the area of assignment.
    • Working understanding of carceral systems, higher education in prison programs, and barriers to reentry.
    • Experience working with incarcerated or formerly incarcerated people.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, in writing and speech
  • Demonstrated ability to work toward and communicate the need for increased educational access for people currently and formerly imprisoned in the Appalachian region
  • Proven ability to collaborate and work independently
  • Excellent organizational skills with regard to scheduling and managing multiple channels of communications
  • Capacity to problem solve, manage time, and contribute to caring, compassionate work culture
  • Ability to attend to details
  • Ability to travel to and enter SCI-Greene in Pennsylvania and federal prisons in West Virginia
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, Power Point, and Google Drive
Requirements
  • Valid US driver's license
  • To visit a state prison in PA or a federal prison in WV, individuals must obtain volunteer status, requiring completion of a clearance form and successful background check. Candidate must obtain security clearance within two months of starting the position.
