What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a highly motivated R&D Systems Engineer to become the B83-0/1 Technical Basis Realization Team (TBRT) Lead. Our team executes design, development, qualification, assessment, and sustainment activities associated with the weapon system. In this role, you will be responsible for and must be familiar with all aspects of engineering work at SNL pertaining to the B83-0/1 and its annual assessment, including preparing and delivering programmatic and technical presentations and assisting in writing the annual assessment report. As the TBRT Lead, you will be the primary interface to numerous component teams and Surveillance organizations who perform testing on behalf of the weapon system.

On any given day, the B83-0/1 TBRT Lead may be called on to:

  • Partner with the Weapon System Lead to guide a high-performing, dynamic and multi-disciplinary team in carrying out the stewardship mission for the B83-0/1 Stockpile System.
  • Implement the Risk-Informed Stockpile Evaluation framework by identifying, prioritizing, documenting, and reporting on activities that improve our understanding of the system.
  • Shape and manage a diverse technical basis portfolio that supports annual assessment.
  • Maintain knowledge of current hardware and software infrastructure, and plan for future resources needed to support sustainment of the B83-0/1 Stockpile System.
  • Team with peer TBRT Leads on other programs at both SNL/CA and SNL/NM to address cross-cutting topics of interest.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and domain specialists to successfully investigate anomalies and resolve system-related issues.
  • Engage and team with numerous groups at SNL (e.g. component engineers, surveillance, independent assessment, military liaison, system surety, nuclear safety, technical subject matter experts) as well as external agencies such as the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), and Pantex Production).

The successful candidate will become intimately familiar with the detailed function of B83-0/1 nuclear weapon components, subsystems, and systems, and will have the opportunity to exercise investigative freedom in engaging the broad Nuclear Weapons community.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite.

The position requires an ability to travel up to 25% to support the mission to locations including, but not limited to Albuquerque, NM; Amarillo, TX; Kansas City, MO; and Washington, D.C.

Applicants on this requisition may be interviewed by multiple organizations at Sandia National Laboratories.

If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
