In this highly independent, customer-facing role, you'll operate from a company-provided mobile service vehicle to diagnose and repair motorcoaches and other commercial vehicles at customer locations and in the field. From complex diesel and electrical diagnostics to HVAC, electronic, and emerging EV systems, you'll solve challenging problems where they happen and help customers maximize vehicle uptime. Pay Rate: $45.00 - $60.00 / Hourly

This information represents our good faith estimate of the base salary range for this position upon hire, based on available data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on geographic location. Individual pay is determined by additional factors including job related skills, experience, applicable education or training and other relevant factors.

Position Overview

The Mobile Diesel Technician is an advanced-level field service technician responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining motorcoaches and other commercial vehicles at customer locations and remote job sites. Operating from a company-provided mobile service vehicle, this position independently performs complex mechanical, diesel, electrical, HVAC, and electronic diagnostics and repairs while delivering responsive, professional service directly to ABC customers.


The Mobile Diesel Technician serves as a trusted technical resource in the field, taking ownership of repairs from initial diagnosis through completion and communicating effectively with customers, Service leadership, Parts personnel, and other technical resources. This position requires regular travel, including overnight travel, and the ability to work independently while maintaining ABC's standards for safety, quality, documentation, and customer service.

Key Responsibilities

Mobile Field Service & Customer Support



  • Travel to customer locations and other field sites to diagnose, repair, and maintain motorcoaches and commercial vehicles.
  • Operate a company-provided mobile service vehicle to deliver on-site technical support and repair services.
  • Serve as a primary technical point of contact while on-site, providing customers with professional communication regarding vehicle concerns, repair status, and recommended actions.
  • Respond to field service needs throughout the assigned service area, including overnight travel as required.
  • Represent ABC Companies professionally at customer facilities and job sites while maintaining strong customer relationships.
  • Coordinate with Service leadership, Parts, and other internal resources to resolve customer concerns efficiently.


Advanced Diagnostics & Repair



  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain motorcoaches, commercial vehicles, and other equipment as assigned.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting across diesel, mechanical, electrical, HVAC, electronic, and integrated vehicle systems.
  • Diagnose complex and intermittent vehicle concerns using diagnostic equipment, software, electrical schematics, technical documentation, and established troubleshooting procedures.
  • Perform root cause analysis to identify and resolve recurring vehicle or system concerns.
  • Complete repairs safely and efficiently while maintaining manufacturer and ABC quality standards.
  • Verify completed repairs and proper vehicle operation before returning equipment to service.
  • Identify required parts, components, and materials and coordinate availability with Parts personnel.


Mobile Service Vehicle & Equipment



  • Maintain the company-provided mobile service vehicle in a clean, organized, safe, and service-ready condition.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory of parts, supplies, tools, and equipment necessary to support field service activities.
  • Safeguard company equipment, tools, parts, and other assets assigned to the mobile service operation.
  • Identify replenishment, maintenance, or equipment needs and communicate them to the appropriate internal resources.


Documentation & Communication



  • Clearly and accurately document diagnostic findings, repairs performed, parts utilized, labor, and other required information on work orders using company systems and software.
  • Maintain accurate records associated with customer visits and field service activities.
  • Communicate repair findings, recommendations, unresolved concerns, and follow-up requirements to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate time and attendance reporting.


Technical Support & Continuous Development



  • Serve as a technical resource to Service personnel and internal teams when advanced diagnostic support is required.
  • Collaborate with shop leadership and other technical resources to resolve difficult or unusual vehicle concerns.
  • Share technical knowledge and field observations that may help identify recurring issues or improve service practices.
  • Continuously develop technical knowledge across evolving commercial vehicle systems, diagnostic technologies, and repair techniques.


Safety & Compliance



  • Perform field service work in accordance with ABC Companies' safety policies and established repair practices.
  • Assess customer and remote work environments and perform work in a manner that prioritizes personal, customer, and vehicle safety.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable EPA, OSHA, DOT, and other federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Maintain required licenses and certifications applicable to assigned responsibilities.
  • Travel and work overtime or weekends as required to support customer and operational needs.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.



Qualifications

  • 10+ years of diesel, motorcoach, or heavy commercial vehicle diagnostic and repair experience preferred.
  • Advanced experience with heavy-duty diesel equipment, including motorcoaches, transit buses, tractor-trailers, heavy equipment, or similar commercial vehicles.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently perform advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics across mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and electronic vehicle systems.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis and resolving complex or recurring vehicle concerns.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, service manuals, technical documentation, and diagnostic information.
  • High-voltage and electric vehicle (EV) experience highly valued. Candidates with significant EV/high-voltage diagnostic and repair experience may be considered with less motorcoach-specific experience.
  • Previous mobile, field service, senior technician, or lead technician experience preferred.
  • Experience with body and frame repairs and interior component repair/replacement preferred.
  • Audio/video system knowledge preferred but not required.
  • EPA refrigerant certification required or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic software, service writing systems, work order tracking systems, computers, and other shop technology.
  • Must possess the personal tools necessary to perform assigned responsibilities.
  • Valid driver's license and driving record meeting company requirements required.
  • CDL Class B with Passenger Endorsement preferred.
  • ASE, Cummins, Detroit, Allison, HVAC, EV/high-voltage, or other relevant technical certifications preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly, including overnight travel, and work independently at customer locations and remote job sites.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to move items weighing at least 100 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb, and move continuously for extended periods of time (80-100% of shift).
  • Ability to safely enter, exit, and work inside, underneath, and around motorcoaches and other commercial vehicles.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and mobile service equipment.
  • Ability to perform repairs at customer locations and remote job sites where shop equipment or environmental controls may be limited.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors for extended periods and in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to drive for extended periods and travel overnight as required.
