The mission of Laboratory Animal Resources (
LAR) is to provide
NCSU faculty with optimal animal resources at the least practical cost. The term "animal resources" includes not only animal housing facilities but also animal husbandry services, veterinary care, technical services, expertise in laboratory animal technology and medicine, and assurance of compliance with regulatory requirements and institutional policies for animal care and use.
LAR is responsible for assisting faculty in conducting animal experimentation in keeping with these standards and is committed to assuring the well-being of experimental animals while providing services that facilitate their humane and reasonable use.

| Essential Job Duties |
The Animal Care Research Technician provides high-level skilled nursing care and technical surgical support for laboratory animals with a high degree of independence. This role serves as a critical bridge between clinical care and research execution, managing complex transgenic rodent colonies while ensuring strict adherence to federal and institutional regulatory standards.
Primary Duties:
Surgical & Clinical Support
- Provide skilled nursing care and anesthesia administration for laboratory animals undergoing surgical procedures with minimal supervision.
- Monitor drug inventories for sedatives and anesthetics, maintaining meticulous logs for the usage and disposal of controlled substances.
- Ensure a sterile and safe environment by following infectious disease protocols and managing biological/infectious waste.
Colony Management & Research Operations
- Direct the lifecycle of transgenic mouse colonies, including genotyping, husbandry, database management, and animal procurement.
- Perform complex experimental procedures such as phenotyping, tissue harvesting, preparation, and sectioning.
- Support the design and execution of evolving research projects, adapting methods and procedures to meet specific investigative needs.
Data Integrity & Training
- Serve as a technical resource for Principal Investigators (PIs), providing training on specialized procedures and colony management.
- Maintain comprehensive laboratory notebooks and assist with data analysis to ensure the integrity of research findings.
- Execute specialized treatments and research tasks with precision and a proactive approach to animal welfare.
Regulatory Compliance
- Uphold rigorous institutional and federal standards, including compliance with OSHA, IACUC, USDA, AAALAC, and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) guidelines.
Physical Requirements & Licensure
Licensure: Must possess or obtain a valid North Carolina driver's license within 60 days of the start date and maintain it throughout the duration of employment. Physical Demands: Must be able lift 50 pounds frequently and 90 pounds occasionally with our without accommodations.
