As one of the eleven academic departments in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Public and International Affairs encompasses the academic, professional, and practical activities of the Political Science and Public Administration departments, the Master of International Studies graduate program, the Leadership in the Public Sector undergraduate program and the Public Safety Leadership initiative.
Created in 2006, the School provides a vibrant and innovative platform for understanding, exploring and engaging with issues of leadership and public affairs-from our Raleigh campus to the halls of the North Carolina General Assembly, the power centers of Washington and decision-making forums across the globe. The Political Science department enrolls 650 undergraduate majors and provides 12,000 semester credit hours of undergraduate instruction each academic year. In addition, the School enrolls 150 Masters student and 25 PhD students. The department has 27 Tenure Track and a dozen Professional Track faculty. |

| Essential Job Duties |
We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Accounting Technician to join our team in the School of Public and International Affairs (
SPIA). In this role, you will play a key part in supporting the financial operations of multiple departments and programs, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across a variety of accounting functions.
As an Accounting Technician, you will manage a full range of accounting responsibilities, from initiating and processing financial transactions to maintaining and analyzing complex financial records. You'll oversee critical program finances, including those of specialized initiatives such as
AOMP and
LEEP, and help ensure all financial data is accurate, up-to-date, and aligned with institutional policies.
Working closely with the Business Officer, you will contribute to maintaining and monitoring SPIA's budget and spending plan, while also helping to identify opportunities for process improvements. This role requires someone who can interpret policies, solve problems effectively, and adapt to evolving systems by testing and implementing new procedures when needed.
In addition to financial responsibilities, you will provide essential support to faculty, staff, and students, serving as a helpful resource within the front office. You'll also act as a back-up liaison for Finance and HR processes, ensuring continuity in the Business Officer's absence.
This position includes involvement in key HR-related tasks, such as assisting with non-permanent employee hires, monitoring employment transactions, and supporting bi-weekly timekeeping processes. You'll help ensure timesheets are accurate, approved on schedule, and compliant with guidelines.

Qualifications
| Minimum Experience/Education |
High School Diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience. |
| Preferred Qualifications |
- Combination of training and business administration and accounting experience in higher education environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft, Google Suite applications and Peoplesoft.
