Job Announcement

Since 1977, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has served the Fairfax County community by enhancing mobility, safety, and the quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors through planning, coordinating, funding, implementing, and sustaining a multimodal transportation system. FCDOT is seeking a highly motivated, qualified, and public service-oriented transportation professional to work across multiple disciplines in the transportation planning field.

The position is in the Transportation Planning Section of FCDOT, which serves as the long-range transportation planning team for Comprehensive Plan interpretations and amendments, multimodal corridor studies, and coordination and planning at the local, regional, and state levels. The selected candidate will work closely with public agencies, private interests, elected officials, local and regional stakeholders, and residents of the county to ensure appropriate and context sensitive plans are in place for the long-term growth and well-being of the county.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with long-range transportation planning, transportation impact analyses and studies at the Comprehensive Plan level, and small-area and site-specific plans in coordination with county plans and policies
  • Participating in area-, corridor- and facility-level transportation feasibility studies
  • Evaluating multimodal transportation impacts of proposed amendments to the Comprehensive Plan
  • Reviewing analyses and reports generated by consultants and other agencies
  • Preparing professional summaries, analyses, and reports as required to successfully complete projects or assignments
  • Assisting in preparing briefings for senior leadership and other audiences, as required to meet specific audience needs
  • Preparing for, participating in, and conducting public outreach for community meetings, advisory groups, and technical work committees
  • Arranging, coordinating, and attending project-related meetings and workshops, both in-person and virtual, including occasional evenings and weekends
  • Assisting with other administrative tasks or projects, as needed, to support the Transportation Planning Section team and program operations
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus two years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in transportation, urban and community design, land use planning, sustainable and green building, civil engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong background in land use and transportation planning.
  • Experience conducting/reviewing multimodal transportation studies or evaluating transportation systems in relation to land use planning.
  • Experience with multimodal planning, bicycle and pedestrian planning, context sensitive solutions, complete streets, and vehicle traffic operations.
  • Experience in preparing long-range transportation plans, evaluating bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure and levels of comfort and service, evaluating transportation impacts of land use proposals, using GIS, and utilizing trip generation and travel demand forecasting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, experience preparing and giving presentations, and implementing community outreach.
  • Experience using or reviewing analyses, reports or other work products utilizing various transportation and office professional tools.
  • Ability to coordinate and complete multiple assignments within established priorities.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Desire to advance a collaborative and supportive culture.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary. However, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items less than 25 pounds in weight. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Conducts periodic field observations requiring measuring and calculating, standing, riding, and exposure to the elements (weather). All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
