Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Asset Strategy Organization is responsible for developing both portfolio-wide and individual asset strategies to achieve the Company's Breakthrough Goals of Safety, Compliance, Asset Reliability, and Cost Competitiveness (Customer Value). These strategies support all Company Electric Supply assets, including combustion turbines, combined-cycle plants, hydro plants, wind farms, solar gardens, and future renewable resources such as battery storage.


The Asset Availability Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability and availability of generation assets across the utility's portfolio. This individual will analyze operational data, understand and apply benchmarking data, assess system health, and identify threats to generation to proactively mitigate risks. The role requires strong analytical skills, and cross-functional collaboration.


The Senior Program Engineer is responsible for the engineering and technical disciplines required to successfully execute projects. This role plans projects, establishes project criteria, coordinates project reviews, and ensures proper implementation of all project elements. The Senior Program Engineer is accountable for scheduling, planning, forecasting, resourcing, and managing technical activities to ensure accuracy and quality from project conception through completion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the Agile project delivery cadence by balancing team performance with tight deadlines.
  • Develop specifications for required project equipment.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable codes, standards, QA/QC policies, performance requirements, and specifications.
  • Review engineering deliverables and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to project managers and other project participants.
  • Prepare, schedule, coordinate, and monitor assigned engineering projects.
  • Assign responsibilities and mentor project team members.
  • Build strong partnerships with business partners and develop a deep understanding of their business objectives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or as necessary.

Additional Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Asset Risk Assessment



  • Review and analyze Threats to Generation reports, system health metrics, and operations feedback to identify factors impacting unit availability.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive risk register for generation assets.


Performance Benchmarking, Tracking & Reporting:



  • Establish and maintain tracking metrics for asset availability and reliability.
  • Establish, support development of and compare performance with industry benchmarking.
  • Create executive-level reports and dashboards to communicate performance trends and risk mitigation progress.


Stakeholder Engagement



  • Facilitate regular stakeholder reviews to address site-specific concerns, emerging risks, and mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, engineering, and planning teams to ensure alignment on priorities.


Continuous Improvement



  • Recommend and support initiatives to improve asset performance and reduce forced outages.
  • Lead root cause analysis efforts for events impacting availability.


Strategic Communication



  • Present findings, insights, and recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Support strategic planning efforts with data-driven assessments of asset health and availability.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in design and visualization software such as AutoCAD.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, with the ability to learn new software tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.
  • Solid understanding of GD&T principles.
  • Knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, best practices, and performance standards.
  • Strong understanding of power generation systems and utility operations.
  • Experience with asset management frameworks and reliability engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of LEAN principles, including the CE Way four basic plays, with the ability to implement them effectively.
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools such as Excel, Power BI, or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity with SAP.
  • Strong presentation skills, particularly for executive audiences.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and influence outcomes without direct authority.
  • Strong project and program management capabilities.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with four (4) or more years of experience in a program engineer capacity

    • [OR]Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with seven (7) or more years of experience in a program engineer capacity



Preferred Experience

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in power generation, asset management, or reliability engineering.
  • Experience within the utility or energy sector.
  • Professional certifications such as CMRP, PMP, or Six Sigma.
