Overview

Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) offers one of the most forward-looking educational environments in dental medicine in the country. Tufts Special Care Dental Clinics (formerly Tufts Dental Facilities for Persons with Special Needs) is a network of seven outpatient clinics that provides dental care to approximately 7,000 developmentally disabled patients in the state of Massachusetts under the umbrella of TUSDM and in partnership with the Massachusetts Departments of Public Health (DPH) and Developmental Services (DDS).
In addition to outpatient services, patient care is also delivered in operating room settings at three affiliated hospitals within the state. TSCDC serves as a vital teaching venue for General Practice Residents through the Tufts GPR program and for fourth-year dental students, offering hands-on experience in treating patients with special needs.

What You'll Do

Under limited supervision, delivers high-quality customer service by greeting patients, verifying and updating patient information, and addressing patient inquiries. Schedules and confirms appointments to optimize clinic operations. Performs financial tasks, including daily insurance verification, generating financial estimates, payment collection, and other general administrative support.
  • Greeting and welcoming patients with a warm, professional demeanor. Providing excellent customer service, addressing patient concerns, complaints, and questions with care.
  • Answering and handling phone calls, including inquiries, scheduling needs, and patient questions.
  • Managing appointment scheduling, including booking, confirming, rescheduling, and optimizing the clinical schedule daily, ensuring smooth, efficient patient check-in and checkout processes.
  • Maintaining accurate patient records, including demographics, medical history, and insurance information, and completing administrative tasks such as data entry, scanning, and utilizing office systems.
  • Verifying insurance benefits and eligibility, updating insurance details, and determining patient out-of-pocket costs. Obtaining financial agreements and collecting payments, including managing past due balances, issuing statements, and reviewing aging reports.
  • Participate in regular team meetings, training, and provide support to other clinics within the program and to internal departments, as needed.

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:
Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:
  • High School degree/equivalency.
  • 3-5 years job-related experience in healthcare office setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of dental terminology, dental coding, and dental insurance plans including MassHealth.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Intermediate proficiency in dental/medical practice management software and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Sound knowledge of HIPAA guidelines.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and remain well-organized.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in working with individuals with developmental, behavioral, or medical complexities.
  • Certified Dental Coder (CDC).

Pay Range

Minimum $24.70, Midpoint $29.50, Maximum $34.20

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
