THE POSITION

The Department of Health (DOH) is seeking an Epidemiology Research Associate who is eager to support important public health work. This role offers the chance to study disease trends and strengthen systems that protect communities across the Commonwealth. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports disease surveillance and analysis on behalf of the Division of Tuberculosis and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (TB/STD) by improving data systems and reporting. The work strengthens public health efforts by enhancing data quality, supporting program operations, and guiding surveillance activities. As an Epidemiology Research Associate, you will perform the following duties:

  • Data Analysis: Conduct analyses, review data quality, and develop reports and dashboards using surveillance systems
  • Program Support: Work with program staff to oversee Pennsylvania National Electronic Data Surveillance System (PA-NEDSS) data, manage electronic lab reporting, and guide case notifications
  • System Collaboration: Coordinate with technology teams to improve surveillance systems and address technical issues
  • Cross Program Work: Integrate TB and STD data with other public health datasets to support broader epidemiologic studies
  • Data Communication: Explain data findings, limitations, and uses to staff, partners, and stakeholders
  • Policy Contribution: Support the review and development of surveillance policies and assist with applying disease reporting requirements

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hour per week
  • Work hours are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg, PA. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of professional experience performing public health or environmental health epidemiological investigations or studies, or designing and managing a disease surveillance system; and a master's degree that includes or is supplemented by six credits in epidemiology, environmental health, statistics, or research.

Other Requirements:

  • One year of experience using SAS, R, or Python statistical software packages.
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
