The school has vibrant undergraduate and graduate programs, with over 400 undergraduate majors and 170 graduate students, and an extensive research portfolio. Its faculty, staff, and students participate in a range of dynamic and collaborative research programs and enjoy modern facilities located on a pleasant urban campus in the City of Atlanta, Georgia.

Job Summary

The School of Chemistry and Biochemistry (https://chemistry.gatech.edu/) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work with Professor A.J. Arduengo and collaborating faculty in the ReWOOD Center. The selected candidate will help to develop and implement technology for Renewables-based Economy from Wood. The postdoctoral fellow will also have the opportunity to collaborate with other external partners on issues associated with process scale-up and industrial startup. Postdoctoral appointments are initially for one year with the possibility of renewal pending satisfactory performance and continued funding. A competitive salary is offered commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and scaling processes for the use of woody biomass as a sustainable carbon source for a new commercial infrastructure to platform chemicals, materials, and advanced pharmaceuticals.
  • Mentoring graduate students working on connected projects.
  • Administrative duties related to team management and stakeholder & extramural partner engagement.
  • Monitoring and administration of best laboratory safety practices for procedures and policies for work ranging from small-scale (~ gram-scale) to pre-production scale (100g-Kg scale).
Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry, and/or Chemical Engineering
  • Experience with industrial process development
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience bridging organic and inorganic disciplines as they relate to chemical synthesis and production.
  • Expertise with the use of on-line and traditional (library) information discovery and retrieval.
  • Strong intuition and data analysis skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Product purification processes (especially as applicable to large-scale industrial procedures).
  • Experience and mastery of spectral data analysis, analytical analysis & interpretation as related to substance identification, identity confirmation, and quality control.
  • Knowledge of and experience with GMP-scale production.
  • Knowledge of and experience working under inert atmospheres.
  • Willingness to expand activities into non-traditional laboratory processes and procedures.
