The Opportunity

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is seeking dedicated and professional Campus Safety & Security Officers/Dispatchers to join our Worldwide Campus Safety & Security team. This role is essential in supporting a safe, secure, and welcoming campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Safety Officers/Dispatchers serve as both field responders and communications center personnel, acting as the department's front-line representatives. This position requires integrity, strong communication skills, and the ability to respond effectively in dynamic and sometimes high-pressure situations. Team members play a key role in protecting university assets, supporting emergency response efforts, and promoting a proactive, community-focused approach to campus safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a visible and professional presence to promote campus safety and security

  • Respond to fire, medical, and security-related incidents across campus

  • Assist armed officers with field operations and incident response activities

  • Operate as a dispatcher in the Communications Center, receiving and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls

  • Coordinate and dispatch appropriate safety, security, and emergency services in a timely manner

  • Provide accurate and timely documentation of incidents, communications, and responses

  • Support campus community engagement efforts and participate in university events

  • Adapt to dual-role assignments between field operations and dispatch responsibilities

  • Uphold departmental policies, procedures, and safety standards at all times

  • Contribute to a collaborative, service-oriented, and community policing environment

Compensation

The hourly rate for this position is $18.00 per hour. Employees assigned to night shifts may be eligible for an additional $1.50 per hour shift differential, in accordance with university policy. The final offer will consider the candidate's skills, qualifications, and experience, along with applicable state regulations, internal equity, and business needs, and may fall outside of the stated rate.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required, including basic proficiency in spelling, grammar, composition, and math

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of relevant work experience required

  • 1-3 years of experience in law enforcement, corrections, military service, or a similar security-related field preferred

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, including clear speech and legible writing

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, including radio, phone, and in-person communications

  • Strong time management and prioritization skills

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Ability to remain effective in high-pressure or stressful situations

Preferred Experience:

  • Background in security, law enforcement, corrections, military service, or related field

Required Licenses, Certifications, and Security Clearances:

  • Must pass criminal background check and drug screening; no felony convictions

  • Valid Arizona Driver's License and must meet University-approved driver standards

  • Must meet University driving policy (Use of Equipment and Vehicles Procedure 1.17), including:

    • No more than 3 moving violations and/or accidents in 3 years

    • No more than 2 moving violations and/or accidents in any 1 year

    • No major convictions within the last 3 years (including DUI, reckless driving, hit-and-run, assault or homicide by motor vehicle)

  • Arizona DPS Unarmed Guard Card required

  • CPR/AED certification required

Additional Requirements:

  • Must successfully pass annual departmental physical fitness assessment
