Overview

The Clinical Pathology Laboratory is responsible for providing accurate, timely diagnostic test results for patients of the hospitals that are part of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, as well as test results for research animals. Laboratory testing includes hematology, clinical chemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, fluid analysis/cytology, blood banking, and miscellaneous test procedures. Laboratory personnel also play a role in the education of veterinary hospital staff on the principles of diagnostic testing and good preanalytic specimen handling.

What You'll Do

This position involves the performance of many specific diagnostic tests including, but not limited to, CBC, urinalysis, coagulation, serology and parisitology along with the operation of automated laboratory instrumentation according to procedures outlined in the laboratory SOPs. The ability to maintain and troubleshoot assays and instrumentation, perform and interpret quality control and maintain exceptional documentation for each lab activity is required. Working either alone or cooperatively with other lab and hospital personnel will be expected while honoring expected turnaround times for patient testing. Weekend, holiday and on call work will be required and scheduled on a rotating basis. Flexibility in working hours will be necessary to help cover illness, vacation and other scheduling problems. Participation in student/intern/resident education regarding routine diagnostic tests may be involved and could include answering questions regarding patient samples and lab work, or instruction of students in a setting outside of the diagnostic lab.
  • Performance of all laboratory testing procedures, including
    • CBC and manual differential
    • Clinical chemistry
    • Coagulation, blood type and crossmatch
    • Other miscellaneous testing performed by the laboratory.
  • Customer service including interations with clinicians, technicians and students
  • Clerical tasks including sample accessioning, troubleshooting patient test orders, preparing sample shipment to outside labs, documenting laboratory maintenance and QC, writing or reviewing SOPs, remaining current on email communications
  • Miscellaneous task such as assigned projects, learning new skills, housekeeping

What We're Looking For

Basic Requirements:
Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:
  • Associate's Degree AS in a science-based program is required for this position. or
  • Bachelor's Degree BS in a science-based program is required for this position.
  • Good communication and organizational skills are essential.
  • The ability to work in a stressful environment in which multiple tasks must be performed simultaneously with accuracy and efficiency is also required.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is necessary
Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 2 yrs of relevant experience is preferred (in either a human or veterinary diagnostic lab setting).
  • MLT or MT with certification and a strong understanding of a wide variety of diagnostic assays, quality control and troubleshooting

Pay Range

Minimum $33.00, Midpoint $39.30, Maximum $45.60

Salary is based on related experience, expertise, and internal equity; generally, new hires can expect pay between the minimum and midpoint of the range.
