What to Expect

Tesla is looking for a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineer to create, develop, and scale up manufacturing processes for our cutting-edge Tesla Cell Manufacturing Line.

The battery cell is one of the most complex and challenging components designed and manufactured at Tesla. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Tesla's world-class manufacturing facilities. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work on a critical subsystem of an incredibly exciting product.

The Manufacturing Engineer will help invent, develop, scale up, and optimize battery manufacturing processes while working in a cross-functional team throughout the entire product lifecycle and launch into manufacturing. You will work closely with Design Engineering, Quality, Equipment, and Production teams to take battery design changes and new battery designs from initial concept through prototype development and into full production.

The ideal candidate takes pride in his/her hands-on work, analytical ability, organizational skills, and attention to detail. They appreciate an environment where superior work is encouraged, noticed, and rewarded and where individuals carry tremendous responsibility. They look forward to learning an incredible amount on the job and stepping up to lead whenever required.

What You'll Do
  • Work collaboratively with Product Design, Equipment Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, EPC, Safety, Production, Maintenance and other cross functional teams as the process expert to ensure production lines run at their intended throughput producing high-quality, high-performance cells
  • Create new processes and their associated metrology from scratch, and integrate existing processes together to create low-cost production-worth process sequences
  • Drive development of new/innovative manufacturing processes from proof of concept through to full scale production that enable improved battery performance and/or cost
  • Get hands-on with pilot process equipment to continuously improve the process sequence and understand the fundamentals of how it works, and drive manufacturability
  • Characterize existing processes, establish controls for critical parameters, improve process robustness to variation
  • Execute DoEs to optimize process conditions
  • Drive process commissioning on new production lines
  • Establish process controls for SPC and develop process related OCAPs
  • Develop and manage PFMEA risk assessments to prioritize process improvement projects and ensure adequate metrology and controls are in place
  • Build process documentation to accurately define the process to cross-functional teams (equipment, quality, production, etc.)

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of industry experience in process development, manufacturing engineering, interdisciplinary/integrated engineering, or similar
  • Experience developing manufacturing processes for new and unique products and transitioning those products from prototype to production
  • Experience introducing new equipment and new processes into a production environment
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to apply in creating various reports and database tools for management
  • Skilled with solving problems using methodologies such as DMAIC, 8D, etc.
  • Experience in automotive or high-volume manufacturing is highly desired
  • Proficiency in data analysis, interpretation, and presentation of experimental data using tools such as JMP or similar
  • Experience with one or more of: roll to roll coating processes, continuous wet deposition processes, dry powder handling and processing, automated mechanical assembly, power electronics, industrial chemical processing, battery manufacturing (li-ion or other chemistry), industrial laser processing, long-term reliability testing
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them towards manufacturing process development
