HDR is looking for a 2026 summer intern to support the Civil group within the Dams, Levees, and Civil Works section. The candidate will be supporting the team in developing construction plans, specifications, quantities, and reports for a variety of water resources projects throughout California. Local projects include levee upgrades, habitat restoration, and utility permitting.

In the role of Civil Intern - Water Resources, we'll count on you to:

  • Utilize strong interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently (with guidance of a PE) and as a part of a group, be able to follow instructions, ask questions, and resolve challenges in a team environment through collaboration and dialogue.
  • Have strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to clearly describe work in written reports, presentations, technical memos, and emails.
  • Support engineers on analysis and design tasks related to water resources projects.
  • Ability to learn software applications to support civil related analysis and design.
  • Assist engineers to develop design options, recommendations, plans, specifications, reports, and cost estimates.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of geography and ability to learn to use geospatial software, and solve geospatial problems related to water resources.
  • Use MS Excel or other types of analytical applications to solve modeling and design related questions, perform calculations, and/or to perform logical analyses related to water resources projects
  • This position is for an intern, so it is not expected that candidate will be an expert at any specific technical subject, but they should be enthusiastic about learning and be able to take on new challenges with the guidance of a senior adviser.
  • Perform other duties as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefer 2 years completed toward degree with 3.0+ GPA pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering or related degree
  • Demonstrated knowledge of software packages related to field of study/industry
  • Local candidates preferred
Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Engineering program
  • Attention to detail
  • Possess strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

The expected compensation range for this position is $22.00 to $25.00 an hour and depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
