Overview

The Commercial Real Estate Risk Director is responsible for the Bank's day-to-day management of its commercial real estate loan portfolio including the overall credit quality, under the guidance of the Real Estate Risk Executive ("Manager"). Participates in the maintenance and updating of the Bank's credit policies and procedures, effectively communicating these to the Real Estate Risk staff. As needed, will be responsible for the ongoing administration of a loan portfolio, including but not limited to, underwriting and processing of new credit requests, renewals/modifications, performing or overseeing timely completion of annual loan reviews, monitoring loan covenants and assessing changes in risk based upon prevailing market and industry conditions.

What You'll Do:

    Supervises Real Estate Portfolio Risk Officers designated by the Manager.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining the appropriate protocols for the efficient and effective monitoring of the Real Estate loan portfolio.
  • Responsible for assigning department workflow including but not limited to underwriting new loan products, underwriting renewals and or modifications of existing loans, preparing interim loan reviews, interim testing of loan covenants, and ad-hoc projects, and developing and implementing tracking systems to ensure timely completion of work product.
  • Directs Real Estate Risk staff in providing timely, comprehensive, accurate and quality credit approval packages.
  • Evaluates team member's performance and develops strategies to increase efficiency and quality of the credit packages.
  • Reviews Real Estate Risk staff credit approval packages to ensure accuracy, completeness and quality for approval up to loan authority, and if needed, escalate to Manager or the appropriate credit committee to obtain final concurrence.
  • Manages a balanced pipeline of simultaneous, complex assignments in sync with high expectations of both internal and external clients.
  • Ensures compliance with underwriting guidelines, credit policy, as well as regulatory requirements.
  • Participates in updating Underwriting Guidelines and Credit Policy when appropriate.
  • Initially responsible for the management of a small loan portfolio that consists of the Bank's largest and most complex relationships to include monitoring, maintaining and potentially growing the loan portfolio. Helps to identify any changes in risk associated with existing loans and takes necessary course of action.
  • Conducts or coordinates the underwriting of new credit requests and preparation of Credit Approval Packages, responsible for any analyses conducted by Real Estate or Credit Analyst in conjunction with the underwriting process.
  • Serves as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Relationship Managers in the maintenance of existing loan client relationships by processing renewal/modification transactions.
  • Oversees the gathering of property financial information from existing clients for preparation (by either Real Estate Risk Officer or Real Estate Analyst) of annual loan reviews.
  • Participates in the restructuring, and if applicable, make adjustment to existing terms and conditions for renewals/modifications.
  • SME for Relationship Managers in their sales efforts by providing market research, accompanying Relationship Managers on client and prospect calls and various other sales/client-oriented projects.
  • Develops a working knowledge of all clients, businesses and prospect opportunities.
  • Manages the collection of and reviews all required collateral information.
  • Responsible for keeping the appropriate personnel advised on increases in the risk profile of loans within their assigned portfolio due to changes in financial performance as well as market and industry conditions.
  • Initiates the necessary documentation to change risk ratings and transfer assets to Special Assets Department when necessary.
  • Ensures each client conforms to all financial covenants and reporting requirements. Keep Bank apprised of the current financial condition of said client and continually monitors collateral quality.
  • Responsible for knowing and understanding all changes to the Bank's Credit Policies and procedures and their potential impact on the loan portfolio.
  • Participates with the bank examiners, bank auditors and loan review staff in their review of the Real Estate loan portfolio, including coordination of any loan related requested materials and completion of responses as required.
  • Participates in industry-sponsored associations, seminars and activities to further the Bank's understanding and presence in the market.
  • Conducts ad hoc projects and assignments as directed by the Manager or Chief Credit Officer.
  • Participates with the loan origination officers in properly analyzing and structuring new credit requests.
  • Monitors economic, demographic and other risk conditions within Bank's market area.


Qualifications

  • 8-10 years of experience in commercial real estate credit management capacities with a financial institution.
  • Must have excellent oral and written skills to communicate policies, procedures and objectives effectively throughout the Bank and to represent the Bank positively to the public and to cultivate strong working relationships with current and potential loan clients.

  • Must have two years of team leadership experience and good team building and interpersonal skills and be a strong, independent thinker with a high level of analytical skills to assess and manage areas of responsibility including determination of loan risk involved and recommendation of credit approvals.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CoStar.



Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Real Estate or related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or relevant professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
