Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $60,300 to $82,100/year. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $60,300 to $103,900/year.

Our 15 faculty members are actively involved in interdisciplinary research spanning Financial Mathematics, Data Science, Actuarial Science, Theoretical Statistics, Applied Probability, Applied Statistics, and Biostatistics. Learn more about the benefits of working at UC Brief Summary of Job Duties: Under the direction of the Business Officer, the Student Affairs Manager supervises all aspects of the undergraduate and graduate academic programs in the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability utilizing a substantive knowledge of University, College of Letters and Science, Office of Undergraduate Education and Graduate Division policies and procedures. Provides Department Chair, Business Officer, or other leadership with informed analysis opinions on Student Affairs matters. Requires the ability to interpret regulations and policy from various administrative offices, to analyze statistical data to make projections, and to effectively manage a large budget (of over $1mil). Supervises all vital undergraduate administrative duties including, but not limited to, the advising of 1,000+ undergraduate students pursuing degree objectives in the Department, course/lab management and scheduling for over 8,500 students enrolled in Statistics courses each year, curriculum development and planning, and faculty advising as it relates to student issues. Supervises, hires and trains student workers/peer advisors and manages the Department's front desk staffing. Responsible for any perceived issues with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, which represents the ASEs. Works frequently with Faculty Advisors, Admissions Chair, BS/MS Program Chair, Department Vice Chair, and Department Chair to solve complex curriculum and student issues. Acts as liaison with campus administration, prepares reports for the College of Letters and Science, the Department Chair and Vice Chair, Graduate Division, and off-campus review agencies. Serves as adjunct member of the Curriculum Committee, Actuarial Committee, Diversity Committee and Graduate Advising Committee. Manages course scheduling as part of the yearly curriculum planning and quarterly lecture planning. Responsible for TA and Reader support for curriculum planning. Analyzes enrollment statistics, trends and projections, including advising on curriculum changes to meet student demand. Advises applicants and current students in the combined 5-year BS/MS degree, manages the admissions process to the program. Coordinates undergraduate scholarships, graduate fellowship opportunities. Coordinates advising of graduate students on a wide variety of academic and personal concerns related to their overall welfare, their success in the graduate program, and conflict resolution. Represents the department at a variety of annual campus outreach events. Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Solid experience with Microsoft Office Suite (especially MS Excel, Word, and Outlook)
- Working experience in Drupal, Acrobat X Pro, Google Apps, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Box Required
- Some experience in managing an annual budget
- Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Substantive knowledge of University, College of Letters and Science, Office of Undergraduate Education and Graduate Division policies and procedures.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
- 10% Undergraduate Program Administration - Coordinates instructional activities for the Department. Supervises academic program affairs staff. Oversees all vital undergraduate program administrative duties for the 2000+ undergraduate students in the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability degree programs, and the approximately 8,500 students enrolled in PSTAT courses each academic year, including but not limited to the following: - Submission of required quarterly and annual reports to the registrar each year with regards to student enrollment and instructor workload - Reviews course prerequisites and ensures enforcement and accuracy. Submits revisions approved by the Undergraduate Committee and Chair to the Master Course Approval to be reviewed by the Dean of Undergraduate Education and Academic Senate. - Supervises course descriptions and Instructional Resource Listings. Oversees the operation of the BA, three BS Majors, joint BS/MS program, Minors - Coordinates and presents information at departmental meetings for new undergraduate students, faculty, instructors, and faculty advisors including the creation of training materials and manuals. - Drafts correspondence for the department Chair and Vice Chair regarding student affairs and enrollment issues, when appropriate. Works with UPA, Faculty Advisors, Department Vice Chair, Department Business Officer, and/or the UG Dean to solve complex curriculum or academic advising issues.
- 25% Academic Student Employment & Financial Management - Manages budgets for Teaching Assistants and Associates of approximately $1.1M annually and fellowship allocations in the amount of approximately $800k (including Block Grant funds) annually from the Graduate Division, College, and extramural funding. Monitor TA/Associate FTE commitment over the course of the year, notifying Department Chair and Business Officer of anticipated surpluses and overdrafts. Responsible for processing and organizing all requests and applications for Teaching Assistant and Reader positions; Advise Faculty Graduate Advisor and Graduate Committee of financial and employment eligibility requirements, and advise faculty in identifying qualified students to fill TA and Associate vacancies that occur during the year. Responsible for notifying students of Associate and Teaching Assistant appointments, fellowship offers, and job opportunities. Advise students of employment limitations, interpreting and complying with the international Visa status restrictions and the United Auto Workers (UAW) union contract. Process all University fellowships and tuition waivers for graduate students, corresponding directly with Graduate Division. Serves as liaison with the College of Letters and Science, the Graduate Division, Summer Sessions, Academic Senate, and other campus agencies concerning Academic Student Employment (ASE) appointment and salary questions. Works directly with PSTAT Department Financial Coordinator and Business Officer to review accounting transactions related to Student Affairs, including but not limited to event planning finances (annual recruitment budget), travel reimbursements, and student award/fellowship disbursements. Reviews with Business Officer for prior approval. Maintains and analyzes Student Affairs budget, expenses, graduate student financial need, and comparative graduate salaries/compensation within UC.
- 10% Undergraduate Program Scheduling - Ensures that the department meets all campus scheduling deadlines. Works with the Faculty Undergraduate Program Director, Vice Chair and Chair to develop a yearly schedule of classes for all undergraduate courses. Manages enrollment projections Works with the Business Officer, Registrar's Office and the Vice Chair to maintain and organize the quarterly course schedule and classroom assignments across all departmental course offerings. Oversees organization of the courses, times and locations to meet the needs of students and the faculty, noting possible schedule conflicts. Works closely with those Departments whose majors must take statistics to insure the schedule will meet the needs for their students. Analyzes enrollment statistics and current enrollment trends.Advises Chair and Vice Chair on budget requests for extra funding to meet enrollment demands. Oversees departmental course evaluations, including the preparation, distribution and interpretation of teaching evaluations. Administers the Statistics summer session program in collaboration with the Vice Chair, Business Officer, and Chair.
- 10% Combined 5-year BS/MS Degree Advisor & Coordinator - Advises students on the pre-application and application process for the 5-year combined BS/MS Actuarial Science program; processes all pre-applications to facilitate review from the Actuarial Program Committee; Writes and disseminates all BS/MS program pre-application decisions. Assists accepted BS/MS students through the advancement process, including writing the 5-year curriculum memo, writing the advancement memo, providing instructions on Graduate Division's online application, and advising on the differences in academic and registration expectations between undergraduate and graduate status.
- 40% Graduate Program Administration - Oversees management of all graduate student services across MA and PhD programs; advises new, current, and prospective PhD and MA students on information regarding department and University requirements for graduate admissions, schedules, employment, and deadlines for degree milestones; ensures that campus and UC policies and procedures are maintained and that any changes are tracked and updated. Coordinates program Qualifying Examinations, annual academic student evaluations, MA Thesis presentations, Doctoral advancement presentations, and Doctoral Defense presentations. Coordinates assignment of cubicles, mailboxes, keys, and other department resources to all graduate students and TAs. Monitors and accurately records all aspects of student progress toward degree milestones, exercising judgement about calling personal and academic problems to the attention of the Faculty Graduate Advisor or Chair; suggests corrective action where appropriate; maintains confidential student files and database; regularly tracks student degree milestones and consults with appropriate faculty advisors and committees regarding progress. Provides a climate which enhances the students' academic environment and in which academic and personal problems may be freely discussed; is cognizant of personal needs of students and counsels or refers accordingly; attends training sessions and takes appropriate action when encountering a distressed or troubled student. Defines and documents department graduate policies and requirement for final approval of the Chair and Faculty Advisors; Develops and implements departmental degree milestone petitions and forms and other tracking mechanisms; Actively participates in program development with various Faculty Committees (Graduate program committee, Undergraduate program committee, etc), suggests solutions to recurrent student issues, and advises on the potential impact of policy changes. Writes, edits, reviews, and updates the Department Graduate Handbook and Teaching Assistant Handbook as comprehensive and accurate program guides. Prepares correspondence, verifications, and memos for approval from Graduate Division, the College of Letters and Science, Academic Senate, Graduate Council, and the Office of the Registrar advising on degree milestones and degree completion status. Maintains close working relationships with the Graduate Division, the Office of International Students and Scholars, Office of the Registrar, other academic departments, and other related offices on campus. Writes and prepares correspondences, memos, petitions, and other documents pertaining to the Graduate Program on behalf of the Department Chair, Vice Chair, and Graduate Admissions Chair, including attending the annual meeting with the Graduate Dean each year. Advises Visiting Assistant Professors, Lecturers, and Faculty (who supervise TAs) on training events and needs
- 5% Special Programs and Recruitment Coordinator - Coordinates several departmental awards and honors, identifying potential candidates, soliciting applications or nominations, and assisting faculty review committee in the selection process. Coordinates the nomination process for intramural awards and fellowships for graduate students. Quarterly meetings with the UCSB Extension Program, Accelerated Study Access Program, and Education Abroad Program to review course availability for their special populations. Responsible for disseminating information for students and the public on the types of degrees offered, and the opportunities within each for future employment. Develops outreach publications and promotional materials about Statistics programs for new undergraduate and transfer students. Represents the department at a variety of annual campus outreach efforts: Scholars Day, Spring Insight, Summer Transitional Enrichment Program (STEP), and Orientation Programs. Oversees orientation presentations for students. Coordinates academic web pages of the Department. Coordinates publication of undergraduate brochures.
