Basic Function The Product Development Engineer Manager is responsible for providing product engineering expertise in developing in-depth understanding in design, product development, and manufacturing processes for Bernhardt Residential Casegoods. This role will assist the Merchandising Team as a technical expert with furniture construction and production methods. This position requires strong analytical and technical skills. The Product Development Engineer Manager will lead the engineering department to provide ground-up engineering of new products, maintain CAD files and product maintenance. The position requires assistance in technical analysis sheets, sample review, and product guidance to the IT/Engineering support and production. Organizational Relationships Reports to Senior Director of RCG Merchandising. Supervises RCG engineers, designers and Free Lance Designers. Works closely with RCG Divisional Manufacturing Manager. Maintain contact with Purchasing, Finishing, Divisional and Plant Managers, Quality Control and Sales. Specific Job Duties Review new product concepts to ensure designs meet (design for manufacturing and assembly) requirements. Generate CAD models, drawings, specifications, and detailed engineering documentation as needed. Complete sketches, models, and engineering analysis/studies that support the development of new products and parts. Communicate with Freelance Designers. Engineer products to meet cost, design, performance, and quality criteria. Participate in prototype reviews; ensuring products meet or exceed all standards for build quality, ease of assembly, comfort, etc. Participate in Residential Casegoods re-engineering efforts, recommending and assisting the implementation of improvements in the over-all product development process. Maintains new and current production CAD files. Establishes and maintains an effective numbering system for all products. Seeks and researches new and innovative products that are feasible for use in the Company's Residential Casegoods manufacturing. Participate in special projects as necessary. Sketches and analyses new products, parts and the development of those products to meet brand standards. Maintain CAD files. Communication with all members of the Product Development team, including Asia teams, and managers to ensure that everyone is aware of developmental changes and all existing product changes. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Bachelor's degree in engineering preferred or combination of job experience. Minimum of 5 years' experience in managing a Product Engineering team (Furniture Industry preferred). CAD experience required (3D software preferred). Must be a skilled problem solver. Solid communication skills - Communicate effectively with people at various levels of the organization and cross-functionally. Proactive, self-starter mindset.
