Software Intern

Bio-Rad Laboratories
parental leave, paid time off, 401(k), profit sharing
United States, California, Hercules
Mar 18, 2026

During the internship, the candidate's day will blend hands-on instrument work with practical software-driven analysis. They will spend time executing verification and functional tests on our medical diagnostic instruments-loading test samples, monitoring runs, and collecting system and component-level logs generated by the analyzer. After each test cycle, they will analyze log files and test outputs using internal tools to identify patterns, anomalies, or regressions. The intern will also use software utilities such as Python scripts, command-line tools, and lightweight automation frameworks to streamline repetitive tasks like log parsing, data extraction, or test configuration setup. This role offers exposure to both hardware workflows (robotics, fluidics, detectors, and subsystem interactions) and the supporting software ecosystem, giving them a well-rounded experience in medical device testing and engineering operations.

How You'll Make An Impact:

  • Increase testing throughput to support timely engineering decisions.
  • Analyze system behavior, logs, and alerts to support fault isolation and root-cause analysis.
  • Identify anomalies and summarize findings to accelerate defect detection and reduce cycle time.
  • Improve data quality and streamline routine testing and reporting workflows.
  • Automate repetitive tasks (e.g., log parsing, data extraction, test setup) to drive lasting team efficiency.

What You Bring:

  • Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree at an accredited university in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science or related field. Eligible candidates must be rising juniors, seniors, or graduate students who intend to return to their academic program the following academic year. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required.
  • Technical Curiosity - Eager to learn how complex medical instruments work across robotics, fluidics, software, and detection modules.
  • Attention to Detail - Able to follow structured test procedures precisely and catch subtle issues in logs or instrument behavior.
  • Problem-Solving Mindset - Comfortable breaking down unexpected results, investigating patterns, and proposing possible causes.
  • Basic Automation Skills - Experience with Python or similar tools to automate simple workflows and reduce manual effort.
  • Clear Communication - Able to document test results concisely and share findings with engineers in a clear, structured way.
