Job Summary

The Start-Up Apprentice or Tech I supports the Construction department by assisting with the start-up, testing, and functionality checks of newly installed HVAC and related mechanical systems. This role is designed for individuals beginning their career in HVAC/start-up operations and will work under close guidance from experienced Start-Up Technicians. Responsibilities include learning to perform equipment start-ups, documenting findings, and ensuring quality and safety on all assigned job sites.

Essential Duties

  • Assist in performing start-up procedures on HVAC equipment and other mechanical/electrical systems as trained
  • Help conduct basic diagnostic checks and functionality testing.
  • Support with disassembling and reassembling HVAC components during troubleshooting under supervision.
  • Take pre- and post-work photos and maintain accurate daily notes/reports.
  • Walk jobsites with senior technicians, project managers, or construction personnel.
  • Assist in attending start-up, turnover, or construction coordination meetings.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with internal teams and clients as directed. (From communication expectations)
  • Help complete start-up documentation and route forms to appropriate supervisors.
  • Provide clear and detailed notes for internal teams and clients.
  • Learn proper use of hand tools, power tools, gauges, and measuring equipment.
  • Assist in maintaining tools, equipment, and work vehicles (as applicable).
  • Follow all company safety protocols and construction site requirements.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
    • Preference given to candidates with vocational training, apprenticeships, or equivalent experience in the field.
    • Craft training is highly valued.
  • General mechanical aptitude and interest in HVAC/electrical systems.
  • Basic computer and technology proficiency.
  • EPA Certification is mandatory.
    • Candidates must also maintain necessary registrations, professional licenses, and certifications relevant to the position.
  • Ability to read or learn to read basic blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills; ability to follow instructions and ask questions.
  • Willingness to work independently as skills develop and follow established procedures.
  • Problem-solving mindset and eagerness to learn HVAC system components and functions.
Work Conditions:
  • Primarily field-based role on active construction sites in the Austin area.
  • Exposure to outdoor conditions, noise, dust, and jobsite hazards.
