Job Description

We have multiple openings for Gardener III/Spray Technician. You will be involved in all aspects of interior and exterior pest control and landscape maintenance services across LLNL's sites. Work assignments will vary based on operational needs, seasonality, and weather, and may include periods of frequent pesticide/herbicide application as well as periods focused primarily on general landscape maintenance and installation. This position is in the Facilities Services Division of the Infrastructure Engineering and Operations Department and may require work at Site 300 located in Tracy, California.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

You will

  • Perform all aspects of pest control across the Laboratory and facility spaces including the application of herbicides and pesticides, and the monitoring, identification, treatment, and prevention of pests.
  • Practice industry guidelines; prepare equipment and mix chemicals using the appropriate treatment and equipment method in compliance with all pesticide rules and regulations.
  • Perform site-wide landscaping and grounds maintenance; mowing, edging, trimming; pruning trees, shrubs, and plants; and installing and maintaining landscaping surfaces.
  • Operate standard equipment and tools used in gardener tasks such as power hand tools, wood-chippers, aerial platform trucks, tractors, trenching equipment, motor vehicles, and other equipment common to the landscape trade. Maintain gardening equipment, including sharpening and changing blades as necessary.
  • Operate specialized equipment including pest control sprayers, live traps, and watering equipment including fumigators, hand tanks, and 300-gallon tanks.
  • Prepare standard and specialized reports for permits, equipment and vehicle inspections, pest control operations, and deficiency forms; record daily pesticide usage and provide input to required pest control records (e.g., Pest Control Trainee Record Book and other regulatory documentation as applicable).
  • Perform tasks in accordance with safety regulations and procedures, fullling all integrated safety, security, property, and pest management responsibilities.
  • Provide good customer service and effectively communicate with all levels of personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience; valid California's driver's license.
  • Current State of California certification to apply pesticides.
  • Intermediate to advanced experience in pest control, including mixing and applying herbicides/pesticides and fertilizers in compliance with applicable rules and regulations and operating spray equipment (including truck tank systems up to 160-gallon capacity).
  • Intermediate to advanced skills, knowledge, and abilities performing shrub and tree pruning, mowing, and trimming.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing irrigation systems and performing specialized tasks, i.e., high-tree pruning, tree removal, and/or stump grinding.
  • Experience operating and maintaining standard equipment and tools for gardener tasks such as wood-chippers, aerial platform equipment, tractors, and motor vehicles.
  • Basic knowledge and ability to apply Safety policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully follow directions and complete requests; customer service and communication skills and the ability to work independently or as a team member interacting well with others.
  • Basic computer skills necessary to complete timekeeping, web-based training, and service requests, and prepare standard reports.
  • Ability to become medically qualified to wear required respiratory and other protective equipment and perform moderate workwhile wearing full-face or half-mask respirators.

Pay Range

$38.03 - $45.63 Hourly

An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Site 300

Site 300 is an experimental test site operated by LLNL. Situated on 7,000 acres in rural foothills approximately six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore, Site 300 hosts approximately 200 employees with expertise in such fields as engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Employees assigned to work at Site 300 may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.

Davis Bacon Act

The Laboratory performs a variety of work, including some that may fall under Davis Bacon Act requirements. When work scope falls under this Act, the Laboratory complies with the prevailing wage requirements.
