Purpose: The Unit Operations Coordinator will assist with coordination and implementation of projects associated with the Hemoglobinopathy Quality Improvement Program (HemQIP). This position will work with the Lifecourse Epidemiology and Genomics Division (LEGD) within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). This position will be situated within the Blood Disorders Unit (BDU) in the Public Health Genomics (PHG) section at MDHHS and will work closely with Newborn Screening Program personnel, maternal child and chronic disease epidemiologists, Children's Special Health Care Services, as well as partner agencies such as the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America - Michigan Chapter (SCDAA-MI) and clinics serving patients with hemoglobinopathies. The Unit Operations Coordinator will provide substantive support for all sickle cell programming including but not limited to, implementation of strategic plan activities, quality assurance, fostering partnerships and collaborations, and evaluation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with follow-up related to infants with hemoglobinopathies detected through newborn screening; and for other statewide projects and grants relating to sickle cell disease.
- Assist in daily operations of the Hemoglobinopathy Program.
- Assist in the implementation and evaluation of the Hemoglobinopathy Program.
- Participate with assuring implementation and evaluation of the MDHHS Sickle Cell Expansion and Enhancement Project efforts for sickle cell disease.
- Maintain knowledge on sickle cell disease and related hemoglobinopathies regarding national treatment guidelines, new developments and resources.
- Participate in departmental initiatives related to public health programs for sickle cell disease; coordinate and take minutes at relevant meetings with hospitals, clinics and stakeholders to assist the BDU Manager.
- Assist in scheduling meetings for Hemoglobinopathy Quality Improvement Committee (HemQIC); prepares meeting summaries and related correspondence.
- Track coordination of tasks associated with the Sickle Cell Data Collection Program and assist the University of Michigan Susan B. Meister Child Health Evaluation Research Center with program implementation as needed; Participate in planning meetings, engaging stakeholders and communication strategies.
- May assist with preparing reports, oral/poster presentations and manuscripts as relevant to share program accomplishments.
- May assist with preparing IRB, medical research designation applications and data use agreements as needed, including renewals.
- May represent BDU in local/state/national hemoglobinopathy/sickle cell initiatives and participates in relevant conferences and meetings.
- Participate in national calls, webinars, and regional meetings as needed.
- Attend section, division and departmental staff meetings.
- Perform other tasks as requested to ensure successful completion of program objectives.
- Collaborate with the BDU Manager on implementation and evaluation of the MDHHS public health strategic plan for sickle cell disease.
- Assist in tracking progress toward strategic plan goals in collaboration with public health programs and partners.
- Collaborate in planning activities for the MI Sickle Cell Educational Network Exchange (MiSCENE) and the Sickle Cell Disease Advisory Committee (SCD-AC).
- Assist with tracking and developing reports on performance indicators and benchmarks to evaluate program effectiveness and accomplishment of desired outcomes.
- Schedule internal team meetings: prepare meeting summaries as needed and carry out identified tasks.
- May communicate with Michigan hematologists on research projects and strategic plan activities as directed by BDU manager.
- Performs other tasks as requested to ensure successful completion of program objectives.
- Participate in community engagement and education activities for the public and providers.
- Maintain a positive, strong, credible, professional and interpersonal relationship with all parties relevant to MPHI projects and represent the best interest of MPH at all times.

Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: Possession of a master's degree in public health, health communication, health services administration, community development, population and health sciences, health policy or a public health related field such as nursing, epidemiology, health education, health economics; a master's degree in social work or a master's degree in public or business administration with a health care concentration.
Experience: Two years of professional experience in an equivalent position of this type or combination of experience with education preferred. Important Skills and Characteristics:
- Willingness to learn about the newborn screening program; personal experience or familiarity with sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies.
- Willingness to obtain general understanding of Michigan Medicaid and Children's Special Health Care Services policy.
- Ability to understand and interpret medical articles relating to newborn screening and hemoglobinopathies.
- Familiarity with the use of databases and spreadsheets for data collection and reporting.
- Experience with survey methods and instruments.
- Experience with health education and outreach methods.
- Ability to develop new contacts and maintain positive working relationships.
- Ability to utilize knowledge to provide consultation.
- Ability to work with clinical professionals and other state partners; technical assistance and training to clinical sites and SCDAA.
- Ability to assist with writing, organizing, and reviewing grant applications and progress reports.
- Ability to prepare summary articles and reports suitable for publication and/or posting to program websites.
- Excellent public speaking, data management, organizational and writing skills are essential to this position.
- Ability to maintain records, prepare reports, and correspondence.
- MS Office software skills are essential.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Hybrid work environment. Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting and transporting handout materials, laptop computer and projector, etc. Involves telephone and/or computer related activity including keyboarding and viewing a computer screen. Requires valid vehicle operator's license and occasional travel to Detroit, Ann Arbor or other areas of the state for meetings with advisory committees, subcontractors and collaborators. Potential for occasional overnight stays and out-of-state travel to attend grantee meetings or conferences.
