Job Summary

The Coordinator for Adventure Programs will be responsible for working with the Assistant Director assisting with the daily management and oversight of adventure-based recreation facilities, student employees and the operations of those areas. These areas will primally include a challenge course, outdoor adventure trips/workshops, indoor climbing center, outdoor adventure equipment rental center, and management of selected outdoor locations on campus.

Essential Functions

Under general direction from the Assistant Director of Experiential Outdoor Education and Adventure, the coordinator helps administer outdoor adventure trip and workshop program, including planning, student staff hiring/training, and assessment.

Travels within various outdoor locations and campus worksites to administer Adventure programming and transport supplies.

Supports the Development and operations of a Team and Leadership Development Challenge Course with both high and low elements.

Assists with the operation of the indoor climbing center including staff hiring/training, route setting, participant management software tracking, and risk management.

Contributes to the management of the outdoor adventure equipment rental center including equipment purchasing, maintenance/repair, and rental management software.

Assists with the creation and management of Outdoor Recreation Based Campus Land Management.

Hires, trains, schedules, supervises, and facilitates professional development for a diverse student staff operating in an environment supporting inclusion and accessibility for all participants and staff.

Provides delivery of adventure activities and student employment practices that contribute to student success and wellbeing.

Supports payroll processes for student staff ensuring alignment with allocated funding.

Coordinates equipment maintenance and recommends purchases for program needs.

Regularly reports assessment and statistical data pertaining to operations, participation and staff development.

Other Functions

Performs related duties, as assigned, or required. Understands responsibilities with respect to Title IX, Clery, and other compliance requirements.

Demonstrates capacity, skill, and willingness to engage students, and contribute to student success.

Understands responsibilities, with respect to conflicts of interest, and behaves in ways consistent both with law and with University policy.

Contributes toward creating a positive and respectful workplace. Uses access to sensitive and/or not yet public University related information only in the performance of responsibilities of position and exercises care to prevent unnecessary disclosure to others.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with two (2) years experience working in an adventure, recreation, or similar setting; or Associate's degree in Adventure Education and Outdoor Leadership or related field with three (3) years experience working in an adventure, recreation or similar setting.

One (1) year of experience with facilitating high and low ropes challenge courses.

Valid driver's license.

Knowledge of best practices adventure programming.

Knowledge of current safety and risk management protocols related to adventure programming.

CPR Teaching certification within six (6) months of employment.

Knowledge and best practices in leadership development.

Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies.

Ability to demonstrate effective customer service skills including but not limited to ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to recommend purchasing decisions based on independent research and judgment.

Ability to prioritize and organize work assignments.

Ability to train and supervise student employees.

Knowledge and ability to interpret industry standards related to safety of participants in a Adventure Programs setting as a risk manager.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in Sport Management, Kinesiology, Education, Outdoor/Adventure Education.

Current Wilderness First Aid CPR/AED certification.

Current nationally recognized indoor and/or outdoor climbing instructor certification.

Current Wilderness First Responder certification.

Current nationally recognized water sport instructor certification.

Current nationally recognized challenge course instructor certification.

Certifications in any of the following: AMGA/PCIA Climbing Wall Instructor, AMGA/PCIA Climbing Single Pitch, ACA Swiftwater Rescue and/or Challenge Course Facilitator Level I (ACCT).

Additional Details

This position will be required to lead programs and training off campus, in wilderness settings, in varied terrain and weather conditions.

Required to work some nights and weekends.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in indoor and/or outdoor athletic facilities and venues. May require travel to competitions, lifting and transporting equipment, prolonged standing, and walking during practices, games, and recruiting activities.

Work Schedule and Work Arrangement

37.5 hours per week.

Salary Information

Pay Grade: PSSAP Grade 26
