About Us:

BlackSky is a real-time intelligence company. We own and operate the world's most advanced space-based intelligence platform and provide customers satellite imagery, automated analytics and high-frequency monitoring of strategic locations, economic assets and events from around the globe. BlackSky is trusted by the most demanding allied military and intelligence organizations and commercial companies to deliver foresight into critical matters that affect national security and the economy. Our global team works with cutting-edge technology to make a difference around the world and prides itself on being people-first, customer-focused and fun.

BlackSky is looking for a creative and responsive entry-level imagery/GIS analyst to support both internal and customer projects. In this role you will be solving a diverse set of real-world problems alongside a team of highly skilled and dedicated analysts. As part of the geospatial analysis team, you will also be among the first to use emerging imagery and analytics capabilities, provide feedback on products and features, and use our platform to tell our satellites where to capture images! You will build your knowledge and skills related to satellite imagery (EO & SAR), AI/ML analytics, and their applications as you collaborate with multiple internal teams and work on projects for customers. Projects are frequently fast-paced and related to current geopolitical events; a solid grasp of international relations and current global hotspots is a benefit.

Your responsibilities will include generating analytic products, supporting senior members of the team on multi-person projects or contracts, tasking and reviewing imagery, conducting open source research, and supporting the development of internal tools and capabilities. This position reports to the Staff Geospatial Analyst and while we would prefer a candidate local to our Herndon, VA headquarters we are open to candidates in certain states.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain plans for imagery/analytics acquisition to support a variety of use cases.
  • Use tools including ArcGIS Pro and QGIS to process raster/vector data, conduct analysis, and generate products using BlackSky imagery/analytics and other data sources.
  • Support customer programs by conducting QA/QC on analytic outputs, generating use case examples, and producing finished products or reports.
  • Research locations, state and non-state actors, equipment (aircraft/vessels/vehicles), activity trends, effects of natural disasters, and other elements related to global current events.
  • Share knowledge and techniques with teammates.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated research and communication skills.
  • Previous professional or advanced academic experience working with GIS data (vector/raster) and satellite imagery. Key areas include image processing, imagery annotation, raster analysis/visualization, 3D visualization, georeferencing, vector dataset generation/manipulation, metadata validation, and data cleaning.
  • Facility with imagery and GIS tools including but not limited to Esri software, SOCET GXP, and QGIS.
  • Experience writing Python scripts to generate insights from data, interact with APIs, and/or run geospatial processes.
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in a relevant field, or equivalent experience in a relevant role.
  • At least six (6) months of relevant professional experience (including any relevant internships).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with imagery-derived analytics.
  • Facility with graphic design or post-processing/production software such as Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator.
  • Imagery interpretation with a defense/intelligence focus.
  • Experience generating finished GIS, imagery, or analysis products.
  • GIS tool creation using ArcPy, ArcGIS Pro Model Builder, or QGIS plugins.
