| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences (
EMES) and the Institute of Marine Sciences at
UNC-CH advances understanding of the earth and ocean processes that govern our planet, shape diverse ecosystems, sustain life, and drive environmental change. We promote exploration and discovery of the natural world by engaging students in research-based learning at all levels. Our graduates are equipped with the strong science foundation, critical thinking skills, and interdisciplinary perspectives required to tackle current and future environmental and resource challenges. We encourage engaged service that translates knowledge for the public good. We support a welcoming and inclusive environment, foster diverse identities and perspectives, and encourage collaboration with all segments of society. |
| Position Summary |
This position will carry out technical model development and application of the
CASCADE model to simulate the future landscape and habitat evolution of the Masonboro Island Reserve. Working within the
UNC-CH Coastal Environmental Change Lab, the Research Specialist will add marsh dynamics to
CASCADE and evaluate how different management actions (e.g., sand placement, jetty bypassing) and environmental changes (e.g., sea-level rise, increased storminess) impact the long-term, decadal-scale resilience of the island-marsh system. The primary goal of this work is to provide natural resource managers with tools to understand how short-term decisions might affect future island function or potentially hasten island loss. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
| Management Preferences |
- Proven ability to translate complex model outputs into accessible deliverables, such as birds-eye view plots, two-page stakeholder summaries, and project web pages.
- Experience in preparing high-quality manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals describing coastal dynamics.
- Ability to work closely with project partners from the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to ensure the modeling scenarios align with stakeholder needs.
