2026 Summer Intern - Product Development Data Science

Department Summary

Product Development Data Science & Analytics is a group of data scientists across 5 global sites. We deliver data and insights about our medicine with excellence and passion. Our mission is to unlock the full potential of data, to accelerate innovative healthcare solutions for patients and society.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.

The Opportunity

  • Statistical research: Applied problems with direct relevance to ongoing clinical drug development of a molecule in the Cardiovascular-Renal-Metabolomic disease area.

  • Optimize the trial design \for molecules in weight management and glycemic control.

  • Learn and support statistical related activities in real clinical trials, e.g. working on statistical analysis plan.

  • Using R or Python, develop an algorithm to explore study design components.

  • Using R or Python, run simulations to evaluate study design operating characteristics under various assumptions taking into account disease specific challenges on patient dropout, confounding factors such as GLP-1 use and imputation methods.

Program Highlights

  • 6 months paid internship, first 12 weeks must be full time (40 hours/week) onsite, while the rest can be either full time or part time, remote or onsite, with the opportunity to extend to up to 12 months.

  • Program start dates are in May/June 2026.

  • A stipend will be provided to selected interns to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the pharmaceutical biotechnology industry.

  • Final presentations of project work to senior leaders.

  • Lead or participate in intern committees to design and coordinate program events and initiatives.

  • Professional & personal development curriculum throughout the program, including networking opportunities, workshops, and panel discussions.

  • Participate in volunteer projects, social events, and team-building activities.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education

You meet one of the following criteria:

  • Must have attained a Master's Degree (no more than a year ago).

  • Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student with at least one year of graduate work by May 2026).

  • Must have attained a PhD (no more than a year ago).

Required Majors: Statistics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Biotechnology, or related fields.

Required Skills:

  • Solid training in statistics and/or data science.

  • Intermediate programming ability in R or Python; familiarity with R Shiny is a plus.

  • Experienced problem solver capable of seeking help when needed.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Excellent communicator, collaborator and team player; comfortable explaining complex technical topics to non-technical audiences.

  • Complements our culture and the standards that guide our daily behavior & decisions: Integrity, Courage, and Passion.

  • Experience with software development workflow including versioning and code collaboration with Git.

  • Passion for learning and curious about drug development in the pharmaceutical biotechnology industry.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $50.00 hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
