Position/Department Summary:
Provides support to reference labs and external clients, internal providers, laboratory, and hospital staff. This includes technical support regarding lab testing strategies based on analysis of the risk, benefit, and cost. Reviews all genetic test orders for clinical appropriateness and provides education to clinical teams on the insurance pre-authorization process. Performs data collection and analysis of genetic test utilization. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the genetics/genomics field and laboratory test stewardship. Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Acts as a liaison between providers and the laboratory to provide education and improve genetic test ordering processes and patient care. Supports the laboratory genetic program to achieve the laboratory quality and customer service goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Triaging phone and e-mail inquiries made to the Lab for genetic testing in conjunction with the laboratory specimen management staff.
- Supporting genetic test utilization across multiple medical specialties, including daily case review, to correct test orders and reduce unnecessary test orders.
- Developing a knowledge of testing technologies used in the laboratories.
- Identifying, investigating, and resolving specimen and result problems related to genetic testing; collecting information about potential systems problems or needs and communicating information to appropriate personnel.
- Educating providers and other stakeholders regarding laboratories' tests, including the appropriate use of tests, limitations/accuracy of tests, possible testing outcomes, sample requirements, interpretation of results, suggestions for appropriate consultations, resources, and/or follow-up for cases with abnormal results.
- Researching and developing reference lab comparisons by researching sensitivity, specificity, detection rates, cost, and turnaround times. Maintains and updates client resources, including lab test fact sheets and hospital websites. Developing standard templates for frequent inquiries and communications.
- Acting as an advocate for the needs and interests of providers and patients in laboratory decisions.
- Instructing providers on the cost-benefit ratio of testing.
- Effectively communicates procedures through written documentation, flow charts, and verbal communication with staff. Develops close relationships with internal and external clients to increase satisfaction.
- Keeping abreast of changes of ICD-10 and CPT codes.
- Developing an in-depth knowledge of CPT codes for molecular genetic tests and guides procedures for code selection.
- Providing support for the insurance preauthorization process, including confirming test and lab selection, CPT code(s), and providing additional laboratory details to support authorization requests.
- Participating in ongoing quality improvement for the laboratory. Develops, produces, and maintains standard Lab policies pertaining to genetic testing. Provides data for the Quality Improvement program and actively seeks quality improvement opportunities. Assess processes, participate in process design, or redesign.
- Identifying and participating in opportunities to collaborate with peer instructions regarding best practices in laboratory test stewardship.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling/Medical Genetics
Experience:
- A minimum of one year of work experience in direct patient care or a clinical laboratory setting preferred
License Required:
- MA State Licensure or Provisional Licensure as Genetic Counselor
