Purpose

The Assistant Manager, Operations is responsible for managing ILA vessel gangs and stevedoring with the objective of maintaining a safe work environment, maximizing productivity, controlling costs, and meeting terminal and operational requirements. This role continuously strives to improve service for all customers and provide an environmentally safe working environment for all ELZ and ILA team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure all daily work assignments are completed properly and safely by Foremen/Chief Supervisors and hourly union labor.

  • Direct Foremen/Chief Supervisors in their daily work assignments to minimize labor costs and maximize terminal efficiency.

  • Determine and order appropriate labor, including additional labor as needed based on business requirements.

  • Monitor labor arrival times, authorize necessary overtime, ensure accurate payroll records, and make appropriate payroll adjustments based on actual hours worked.

  • Establish terminal equipment requirements and direct labor in grounding operations to maximize yard space, secure required chassis, and improve vessel productivity.

  • Make strategic operational decisions to enhance terminal efficiency and reduce turn-time.

  • Reallocate labor and equipment across functions based on business needs, including shifting operating units between tasks (e.g., flip line to break bulk), reassigning Transtainers between import and export operations, redirecting vessel gangs and rail units between vessels and tasks, and assigning or reassigning gate clerks across functions.

  • Handle critical operational decisions to improve overall terminal operations by maximizing labor efficiency and minimizing turn-time.

  • Develop and execute operating plans throughout the terminal facility.

  • Administer the disciplinary process for ILA labor as needed, including issuing warnings, citations, or replacing workers who fail to perform assigned work properly or safely.

  • Direct Foremen/Chief Supervisors to take appropriate action to achieve efficient and safe operations within the terminal facility, including warnings up to termination of employment for rank-and-file ILA labor as appropriate.

  • Issue appropriate discipline to Foremen/Chief Supervisors when necessary, in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

  • Ability to work nights, holidays, and weekends as needed based on vessel schedules and business requirements.

Education

  • High school diploma/GED required; college degree preferred.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Work Experience

  • Experience working in a fast paced environment and managing challenging work relationships

  • Valid driver's license or ability to obtain one.

  • TWIC card or ability to obtain one.

Job Type: Full Time

Salary: 85,000.00 to 95,000.00*

Benefits: Full time employees are eligible for Health Insurance, Paid Time Off, and 401k Match

* The above stated pay range is the anticipated starting salary range for this position. The Company may adjust this range in light of prevailing market conditions and other factors such as location. The Company will work directly with the selected candidate(s) on the final starting salary in accordance with all applicable laws.
