This is a University of Minnesota position and is on-site at the Community-University Health Care Center (CUHCC). This is a 100% appointment, 40 hours/week. The schedule will be 8:00am -4:30PM, Monday - Friday. Some overtime/Saturday hours may be required.

This is an AFSCME Healthcare position. Bargaining unit consideration begins on 11/18/25 and ends on 11/25/25.

POSITION SUMMARY
CUHCC's mission is to seek health equity in our community by advancing the well-being of diverse people. The clinic is known for providing high quality care to diverse patients and is moving forward in improving timely access to care for patients. CUHCC is building a care model that seeks to improve care at four different points: before the visit, during the visit, after the visit and between visits. The Nursing Assistant will focus on providing care before and during the patient's appointment. This position will work alongside the providers, interpreters, nurses and other members of the patient's care team. Excellent customer service skills and ability to work within an interdisciplinary team is essential to this position along with demonstrating professional and respectful interactions with everyone.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Patient Contact/Care: 85%

  • Reviews the electronic health record and plan care in preparation for provider visit
  • Assists with psychiatric or medical needs as they arise: same day referral to medical, lab follow up and hospital transfers
  • Interviews patients, checks vital signs, performs assessments appropriate to patient age and visit type, obtain consents, prints out lab reports, hospital discharge summaries, and related documents
  • Assists providers with procedures, EKGs, and exams once proficient
  • Administers medications and injections, including vaccines once trained and competencies approved.
  • Works with the care team including medical providers, psychiatry providers, mental health nurse practitioners, nurse practitioners, nurses and other staff.
  • Contacts patients with lab results or other needs.
  • Assist team members in delivering patient care throughout the visit to maintain clinic flow
  • Provides patient health education materials around diet, symptoms or other areas as outlined in the after-visit summary and/or care plan as directed by a provider.
  • Coordinate with the patient and other members of the care team to ensure patients receive assistance for medications, find transportation, or connect to community resources (food shelves, groups, shelters) as needed.

Other duties: 10%

  • Maintains examining rooms/replenish supplies/clean instruments
  • Participates in quality improvement projects to improve clinic flow and support to improve patient outcomes

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be included in the application materials

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two quarters of college or Nursing Assistant certification or three months of previous work experience in a health care setting involving patients.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting
  • Proficient in electronic health record applications.
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs.
  • A negative TB test is required for this position and Hepatitis B vaccine is required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Fluency in Somali, Spanish, Hmong, Vietnamese, Laotian, Pashtu or Dari.
  • Previous experience in a Community Health Center setting or with communities who experience many barriers to health care.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: Between $21.63 - $22.89 per hour which equates to $44,990.40 - $47,611.20 annually for a 1.0 FTE; depending on education/qualifications/experience
