The Position

Genentech is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Site Utility Manager to oversee the operation and maintenance of our state-of-the-art utility systems, including a high-voltage electrical substation, cutting-edge microgrid, centralized thermal heating/cooling, and emergency power systems. The Site Utility Manager leads all aspects of our site-wide utility infrastructure. This strategic leadership role is the owner of mission-critical assets, including our high-voltage electrical substation, an integrated microgrid, centralized thermal heating/cooling, and emergency power systems.

This position is responsible for building and leading the team that will operate and maintain our new private substation and microgrid in addition to other energy utility infrastructure site wide. The Senior Manager will also serve as the user lead for related design and construction projects, ensuring safe, reliable, and resilient power delivery for our mission-critical operations. This role assumes full responsibility for the long-term maintenance of all energy utilities after project completion and commissioning.

The Opportunity Key Responsibilities
  • Project Leadership

    • Serve as the user team lead on all design and construction projects for energy utilities.

    • Represent Site Operation's interests in all design and engineering engagements for large site wide utility projects.

    • Articulate technical and maintenance requirements for utility systems. Review and validate technical drawings and specifications by project teams.

    • Lead stakeholders and champion for key construction milestones and commissioning activities, ensuring internal and regulatory safety compliance.

    • Collaborate with business stakeholders, including R&D organization, Site Automation, etc, to ensure sitewide utilities meet the demands of critical stakeholders.

    • Guide the development of standards and specifications for all utility infrastructure and generation systems, including the microgrid, with consideration for predictive analytics and demand response.

    • Following commissioning, oversee all aspects of the ownership and long-term maintenance of the energy utilities to ensure reliability and performance.

    • Act as a senior technical consultant to all site business units for utility planning, load forecasting, and new capacity requests.

  • Operations & Maintenance

    • Implement and oversee the site utility infrastructure maintenance strategy

    • Manage contract service providers in the day-to-day operations ensuring 24/7 readiness for all energy utility systems including high-voltage (HV) medium-voltage (MV) electrical systems; and the central thermal cooling and heating plant.

    • Direct teams responsible for planning, scheduling, and execution of operations and maintenance for all high-voltage, medium voltage and thermal plant equipment ensuring 24/7/365 reliability.

    • Collaborate with Site Automation and Sustainability teams optimizing utilities operations through implementing state of the art SCADA, protection systems, and microgrid controls.

    • Participate in grid services such as islanding, export or demand response programs to enhance resilience and capture operational savings.

    • Develop and implement robust safety and compliance programs aligned with OSHA, NFPA 70E, and other applicable codes.

    • Use a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to prioritize, schedule, and track resources across all utility systems.

    • Support interface activities with the interconnected utility, including outage coordination and load forecasting.

  • Organizational & Financial Leadership

    • Build and lead the in-house Power Utility Management organization responsible for the O&M of the substation and microgrid.

    • Define staffing needs, operating procedures, training programs, and long-term asset management plans.

    • Develop and manage budgets related to the ownership, operation, and maintenance of all energy utilities.

    • Develop and train personnel, with a focus on skill development and career path guidance, specifically for complex energy utility systems.

    • Collaborate with managers and supervisors to improve workplace culture and reinforce core values.

    • Serve as the Incident Commander for all mission-critical utility-related emergencies; lead all root-cause analysis (RCA) investigations and develop corrective action plans to prevent recurrence.

    • Develop and own the Business Continuity and Emergency Response Plan for all site utility infrastructure

Who you are Required Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Power Systems is strongly preferred; a master's degree is a plus. A bachelor's in engineering, environmental management, or a related field, or equivalent experience may be substituted.

  • Minimum 12-15 years of relevant experience in high voltage (69kV-230kV) substation design, operations, and/or utility asset management.

  • Five years of experience in energy management, engineering, power plant, or similar operations administration, with at least five years in a managerial capacity.

  • Proven experience managing utility-scale infrastructure projects through their full life cycle, from design and construction to long-term operation.

  • Familiarity with NERC, IEEE, NFPA, OSHA, utility interconnection agreements, and protective relaying standards.

  • Demonstrated experience in decision-making, budget management, and environmental stewardship.

  • A proven track record of leadership in cultivating a culture of employee involvement and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with private utility owners, campus energy systems, or data center/life sciences infrastructure.

  • Experience in setting up and leading O&M organizations from scratch.

  • Knowledge of microgrid technologies, including DERs (solar, storage, CHP), islanding controls, and load management strategies.

  • Experience in the design, development, and troubleshooting of utilities control systems, including SCADA systems.

  • Experience in utilities infrastructure project management.

  • Registration as a Professional Electrical or Mechanical Engineer is highly desirable.

Certification as a Certified Energy Manager or a related credential.

This position is not eligible for relocation.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $138,000 - $256,400 USD Annual. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
