How You'll Help Transform Healthcare:This position will support the training needs of licensed and ancillary (unlicensed) staff in the Dedicated Training Unit. The Dedicated Training Unitis a clinical teaching model designed to enhance nursing education and training by fostering a collaborative environment with enhanced resources dedicated to developingclinical staff.

The Transition to Practice Facilitator coordinates the orientation of new staff members to nursing inpatient units. Partners with preceptors, CTLs, Unit Director and Clinical Unit Educator to ensure that all staff are clinically competent

The Transition to Practice Facilitatorcoordinates the orientation of new staff members to nursing inpatient units. Partners with preceptors, CTLs, Unit Director and Clinical Unit Educator to ensure that all staff are clinically competent.

  • Coordinates orientation of all new employees to nursing inpatient units.
  • Assesses orientation learning needs of the new employee and partners with preceptors, CTLs, Unit Director, Clinical Unit Educator and Education and Organizational Development department to provide education based on learning assessment, observations, and feedback of staff members on the units.
  • Assists with coordination of preceptor/assistive staff assignments for new employees with preceptors and unit directors.
  • Develops an orientation calendar for each new employee. Including classes scheduled by Education and Organizational Development and orientation shifts and name of Preceptor.
  • Ensures appropriate scheduling of live and online classes.
  • Assists in developing and following up on employee goals, providing a positive learning environment for the employee and ensuring a smooth transition of transfer employees.
  • Partners with unit to ensure that new hire is welcomed and acclimated to the unit culture.
  • Collaborates with unit director and preceptor to assign all licensed staff a mentor (unit staff member other than preceptor to serve as an ongoing resource and support) for the first year. The relationship would begin once orientation is completed.
  • Greets new hire employees and ensures their successful onboarding to the units. Meets with new licensed staff informally at least every two weeks. Collaborates with preceptor to schedule a meeting with new hire and unit director every two weeks.
  • Responsible for monitoring and tracking the orientation status of each new employee. Intervenes and assists in developing an action plan for those not on track. Completes data entry into orientation spreadsheet.
  • Makes recommendations for revising unit orientation plans based on feedback from new hires and input from staff.
  • Collaborates with Nursing Onboarding Manager on training, orientation and recruitment in order to maximize services offered.
  • Identifies and monitors orientation and continuing education requirements to maintain compliance with all accrediting, regulating and credentialing agencies.
  • Assists in Preceptor Development
  • Serves as a resource for preceptors. Develops relationships with unit preceptors and becomes a member of the Nursing Education Council.
  • Ensure that staff who work on off-shifts and weekends are appropriately supported.
  • Coordinates mechanisms to provide regular communication with new hires.
  • Serves as a liaison between preceptor/manager and new hire to assist in resolving learning/adjustment difficulties.
  • Assess and monitor progress of new graduate RNs during first year of employment and intervene as appropriate.

This position requires daily observation, training, and coaching of unit staff members. Collaborates with necessary stakeholders for overall educational effectiveness. Minimal travel required mostly between CMC campus buildings. Use own personal transportation for travel between Carilion facilities. Must be able to work evenings, nights and weekends in order to work with new hire staff.


What We Require:

Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing required

Experience:
Must have a minimum of 3 years of current acute care/PCU level experience as an RN Must have passion for teaching nurses and a desire to stay competent in nursing skills.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Currently licensed as Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or new graduate of approved program eligible to sit for the Virginia licensure exam. AHA BLS-HCP required and must be maintained. May be required to obtain/maintain, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on specific work unit.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Must successfully complete orientation and competency requirements. Keyboarding skills and computer literacy required for automated computer systems, including electronic medical records. Must be able to meet essential job functions.

Must have knowledge/experience in nursing principles and theory, skills in applying adult learning principles, assessment and evaluation skills, skills in interpreting complex data, knowledge of evidence-based nursing, Joint Commission accreditation standards, and Virginia nursing licensure requirements. Must have strong oral and written communication skills, project management skills, time management skills, organizational skills, training skills, customer service skills, and strong follow up skills. Must be able to think critically, be creative and have the ability to take initiative to improve processes. Must be self-motivated and able to work independently. Must be a team player.
